State of Control: A feature-length documentary is a sponsored project of Moving Picture Institute.

State of Control just received a matching contribution from a VERY generous donor! What does this mean? It means that for every dollar you give, our anonymous donor will match that amount up to the $43,000 goal!

OUR $300 JUST BECAME $600!!!

You may be thinking to yourself, "self, what are they going to do with all of that money?"

Well, every dollar over what we use for helping our activists travel with the film and etc, we will donate to a Tibetan organization chosen by Tenzin Seldon and Tenzin Tsundue. So let's show support for State of Control!

Oh! And every contribution is still TAX DEDUCTIBLE thanks to our magnificent partnership with the Moving Picture Institute

State of Control is a feature-length documentary showing a first-hand account of the media crackdown in Tibet and the individuals caught in the crosshairs of the Chinese police state. The film is a sponsored project of the Moving Picture Institute -- a 501c3 nonprofit organization. All contributions to the film are tax deductible.

State of Control is a gripping first-hand account of Tibetan activists who are risking their lives to peacefully protest the oppressive Chinese police state.  The film explores how technology is being utilized both to foster peace and suppress human rights.

 Who We Are

We are Christian Johnston and Darren Mann. Christian is an award-winning director/producer/writer whose films include September Tapes (Sundance 2004), True Life: Trial by Fire, and Blackline: The Beirut Contract. Darren is an award-winning director/producer whose films include An Ox’s Tale, September Tapes, American Sumo, Becoming Barack, and Holiday in Rwanda.

STATE OF CONTROL is a bold, feature-length documentary that takes us undercover in Tibet during one of the most precarious times in the country’s recent history. Our mission was to document the leading Tibetan activists who are risking their lives to peacefully protest the oppression of the Chinese government’s police state.

But what we uncovered was a David-and-Goliath battle with high-stake consequences.

Our journey takes us through embroiled areas of India and Nepal, and then finally into the most conflicted regions of Tibet during a full-scale media blackout. While we were undercover, a dangerous cat-and-mouse game unfolded, and secret police began 24 hour surveillance of us. The stakes were elevated when all of our moves were followed. This eventually led to hotel room break-ins, equipment theft, and our very lives being put in danger.

Forced to flee the region, we returned home to America to find that the hacking and surveillance had not only followed us back, but had reached all the way to Google and several other U.S. corporations. Collectively, this is the largest and most sophisticated internet attack in history. All of this places the Tibetan existence on the precipice of a high-tech war that they lack the technology and resources to fight.

 -------- IN THE FILM --------

During our three trips to the region, we met with several peace activists who are very well known within the Tibetan community for their efforts.

Tenzin Tsundue is one of the Tibet movement's most prominent activists and poet.

Gyalston Sondup is a former Tibetan political prisoner who was tortured and escaped Tibet at age 17.

Tenzin Seldon is a highly regarded young Tibetan-American activist currently attending Oxford University. Her personal hacking story launched the Google China conflict.

While on the ground, we also learned of the plight of political prisoner Dhondup Wangchen -a Tibetan filmmaker who is currently imprisoned for filming ordinary Tibetans speaking out about the Beijing Olympic games.

We will never forget how it felt to witness so many brilliant people committed to finding peaceful solutions for the region. We will also never forget the actions that were taken against us when the police began to suspect what we were doing.

Join Us in our action for Tibet and Dhondup Wangchen!

The Tibetan people are crying out for the world to take notice – over 50 Tibetans have set themselves on fire in a desperate protest to be heard.

By contributing to this film, you will create awareness about the ongoing media blackout and human rights crackdown in Tibet. The film has been slated to premiere at the United Nations Association Film Festival on October 28th, 2012 in a closing night ceremony, followed by potential screenings around the globe via the UNAFF.  This will give the Tibetans in the film their ultimate wish of having their story told to the world. As they said to us many times, “Please, just tell the world what is happening to us here!”

State of Control can send that message – but we need your support TODAY!

What We Need

In order to put the finishing touches on the film in time for the October 28th premiere, we must raise $43,000 to pay for sound mix, dialogue clean-up, score, music licensing, clip clearance, color correction, graphics, HDCAM SR export, and a two week final creative editing pass with an A-List documentary editor. The film requires all of this PLUS funds for promotional outreach to fly our activists to screenings and press events.

What You Can Do

You can support the Tibetans and make their voices heard by supporting this film and giving it the resources to make it to the global stage.
