What are Starlit Citadel Reviews?
Starlit Citadel reviews are a weekly series of short and sweet board game review videos presented by Kaja Sadowski and Joanna Gaskell, and shot and directed by Rob Hunt. Each video is only 5-8 minutes long, and gives a full summary of what it feels like to play the game before launching into our opinions of what works, and what doesn't.
They were originally created for the Vancouver-based online game store Starlit Citadel as way of helping customers find the right game for them, and have grown into a great resource for gamers around the world to get feedback on games they want to play, introduce their friends to the hobby, and find out what's new and exciting in the boardgame world.By the end of our first season in December 2012, we will have released a total of 58 videos, all available for free on our YouTube Channel, BoardGameGeek and 2d6.org.
What do we need for Season 2?
After the success of our first season, we've committed ourselves to making another year of these great reviews happen no matter what. Unfortunately, the reality of running a small game store means that we can't keep funding such a huge undertaking while growing our business to suit our customer's needs -- even though we'd love to continue making a video a week for years on end.
For our second season, Starlit Citadel has committed to funding another 26 episodes -- that's two every month. We'd love to be able to put out more episodes and make the series more fan-focused with holiday specials, theme episodes, and other bonus content... and that's where you come in! We're asking our viewers to contribute $7,000 for 16 more episodes: 12 regular ones, and 4 specials.
What exactly are you paying for?
Every dollar we get from this $7,000 goal will go towards funding the production of another 16 high-quality (and high-definition) episodes of Starlit Citadel Reviews and rewarding our supporters with some awesome perks.
We shoot our videos in 4-review batches, and each set of 4 requires a lot of work to bring to life, including:
- 8 hours of script writing and revisions, to get those gameplay descriptions as clear and concise as possible
- 6 hours of preparation, including memorizing scripts, brainstorming our Pros and Cons, and preparing all of our camera and sound equipment
- 5 hours shooting the reviews (we do a minimum of 2 takes for each), and another 6-8 hours filming gameplay and component footage
- 16 hours of editing and adding titles and music
We're not including the time it takes to play the games and form opinions on them because, let's face it, that's the really fun bit.
If we make it past our initial goal, we'll be adding more episodes to bring us up to a full 52-episode season, as well as further gaming related perks and video specials. Check out the "What if we Exceed our Goal?" section below for more details!
What's in it for you?
Well, besides 16 additional episodes of the review series you know and love and a great big "Thank You!", we have a lot of great perks to offer our supporters. There's a full list over on the right, but you can expect to see:
- digital wallpapers and ringtones -- now you can take Kaja and Joanna with you!
- BGG microbadges -- because you can never have too many...
- add-ons to your favorite games, including character sheets for d20 systems, and custom cards for your favorite party games like Munchkin and Cards Against Humanity
- more input into what we show -- choose the subject of our next review, or have us help get word out on your own game design
- a high-quality DVD of our best videos from Season 1
- more chances to interact with us -- maybe even have Kaja teach you how to wield a sword, or play through a Pathfinder session hosted by Joanna
Our contributors who get perks can expect bonus items to show up at all levels if we make it to our stretch goals!
What if we exceed our goal?
We're in the process of planning some great stretch goals, which we'll update in detail as the campaign progresses. Be on the lookout for a bigger regular season, special episodes with new themes and formats (livestreamed gaming sessions or head-to-head comparisons of similar games), behind-the-scenes content (blooper reel!), more gaming-related perks (maybe even a setting module for your d20 campaign), and more!
What if we don't make it?
This is a flexible funding campaign, which means that all donations get passed on to us, even if we can't meet our goal. We will be making 26 episodes in 2013, regardless of funding, and any money we receive from this fundraiser will go towards making new episodes and specials. If we receive only partial funding, we'll be coming to you -- our supporters -- for feedback on how to give you the most exciting content for your donations.
What else can you do to help?
Don't have any spare cash to send our way? You can still help! Spread the word on our efforts by sharing us on Facebook, Twitter or Google + using the buttons at the top of the page, or just showing some of our videos to a friend or family member and telling them how they can support us. If you'd like to put a promotional image on your blog or website, we've got a resource page full of stuff you can use.
We'd also love to hear your feedback on the campaign and suggestions for stretch goals and perks. We'll be posting regular updates on this campaign page, and will be checking the post comments for your thoughts and ideas.
