Our story starts in 2009
This is the year we introduced Staplehouse, our underground supper club. Each Sunday we (Ryan and Jen Hidinger) invited 10 people into our home in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta, GA. And each Sunday we had a chance to chat with new people, hear their thoughts on food, the city and all the possibilities. Over that time, we built many strong and lasting relationships, and shared some pretty amazing food.
On Labor Day weekend of 2009, we hosted a 200-guest, one-of-a-kind, whole pig roast in our backyard, showcasing handcrafted drinks alongside fresh tacos and scratch pazole. The next year we teamed up with the “#6 Beer Bar in the WORLD 2010,” Brick Store Pub, and hosted an intimate 40-guest family-style dinner. Then just last fall, we teamed up with one of Atlanta’s premiere Urban Farms, Love is Love Farm, and served a farm-to-table bounty.
In 2009 we won “Daily Candy’s Sweetest Things.” In 2010, we made Urban Daddy’s “Perfect ’10 – Everything That Was Important in 2010” list. Then in 2011, we made the front page of CNN.com and landed a full feature story on Eatocracy. Things were going amazingly well as our dream of opening a restaurant became more and more a reality.
Then, everything changed.
On December 21st of 2012 Ryan, 35, was diagnosed with Stage IV gallbladder cancer. Overnight, the years of positive momentum came to a screeching halt. Staplehouse was put on permanent hold.
But in the days and weeks that followed our friends, family, Atlanta community and Ryan's Cancer Treatment family surrounded us with a tidal wave of love and support that forever changed our perspective on life. An early morning phone call from Ryan Turner (a Partner in Muss & Turner’s, the restaurant where Ryan has been chef for almost eight years) added the final jolt of energy we needed to jumpstart the dream. Staplehouse had to become a reality. But, it would be re-purposed to tell a story of hope and positivity. Staplehouse is going to become a restaurant that will support an industry.
We’ll bring inventive, beautifully prepared seasonal food to the Atlanta community and put every bit of the restaurant’s profits after taxes into a non-profit that will support members of the culinary community who encounter unexpected financial circumstances.
Staplehouse will be the first-ever modern, farm-to-table restaurant, powered by award-winning chefs that will never make a single cent!
But chef Ryan won’t be able to do it alone. He’ll be joined by his future brother-in-law and fellow chef Ryan Smith. Smith, currently Executive Chef of Atlanta’s top restaurant, Empire State South is also Food & Wine’s People’s Choice Nominee for “Best New Chef” 2012. This family affair will continue to be supported by Jen Hidinger and new addition Kara Hidinger, currently general manager of James Beard Foundation award-winning Atlanta restaurant, Abattoir.
