I.  Our Story

My name is Harvey Johnson, and I wrote the short film “Stain” (working title). Although the piece takes place in 1972, the themes presented in the film (War, Feminism, Racial Identity, Family Dynamics, etc,) are timely and relevant for today’s audiences.  Along with my producer DawnMarie Ferrara, I am working diligently to bring “Stain” to you by making this short film a living, breathing entity as opposed to just words on a page. My hope is that this piece will inspire dialogue, invite discussion and create forward motion toward a better understanding of how we as human beings relate to one another, express ourselves and, ultimately, love.

II.  What We Need & What You Get

You are probably already familiar with the mounting production costs associated with bringing art to life. Whether a stage play, art exhibit or film, no one can do it alone and nothing is ever free. You can be an integral part in making this dream become a reality by knowing that your $5, $10, $20 or whatever you can give will go towards necessary production costs. We have camera and lighting equipment to rent, costumes to make, props to buy. We have to pay for sound recording, and filming locations. We are most fortunate to be surrounded by amazing talent and crew! They are professionals and see this project as important, timely and a labor of love, and in their generosity to see this project to fruition they have dedicated themselves to the production by agreeing to work below their usual rates.

Even with their commitment, without a venue to share the project we still have nothing.  Art cannot live in a vacuum. For it to breathe, it needs to be shared. It is our intention to submit “Stain” to reputable and appropriate film festivals like: Sundance, Tribeca and the Pan-African Film Festivals, as well as market and promote the film with each successful showing. With your help we can turn that dream into a reality! Your generous donation will make all of this happen and more! For a more detailed list of our Donor Perks, please refer to the Donation Tab. Thank you in advance for any help you can give!

III.  The Conception and Impact

Fall. 1972. Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and protests, race riots and marches for freedom, two women, estranged by a family secret, come together to resolve the issues that once divided them. Jean, a working single mother of 6, and Bernice, a newly engaged expectant mother, meet. Over the course of thirty minutes, a painful past is exposed and we’re left to wonder whether there is hope for a better future.

“Stain” is based on the third part of my stage play Deceit of Truth: A Chronicle in Three Parts, which enjoyed runs in both New York and Washington, DC. In New York, the play was presented twice: once in the form of two one acts (Mating Dance of the Scarlet Honeyeater and It’s In His Kiss) in the “Where Eagles Dare Short Play Festival”. Both parts were audience favorites with nearly sold-out performances. The second run was co-produced with NIA Productions uniting both parts into one full-length two act play. Again, we enjoyed a very favorable response. In 2011, we moved the play to DC as part of the 2011 DC Black Theater Festival, and Roneasha Bell and Reginald L Barnes received nominations for Best Direction and Best Actor respectively! The play has been called thought-provoking, provocative and brave by those who have seen it as the subject matter explores many issues deeply hidden under the fabric of this great American nation. In kind, the screenplay “Stain”, based on Epilogue: Family Embers, the third in the Deceit of Truth chronicles written in 2013, continues the social movement/issue-driven thread of the play by exploring themes pertinent to Black Identity, Race and the War, Gender Roles and Stereotypes relative to modern Feminism, and definitions of Family. While “Stain” is merely a glimpse into the lives of the two women central to its story, that peek is enough to learn of their history and what makes this moment in time important to them both.

This piece has broad appeal to a diverse audience, and our hopes are to introduce it using as many different venues and platforms that are the film festivals, from women, black and indie shorts festivals, to regional and international festivals; but to do this, we have to reach our funding goal which will greatly impact our production deadline and fulfill festival submission requirements.

IV.  How You Can Help

Even if you’re unable to make a financial donation, you can always help by getting the word out! Like our page on Facebook at: Stain The Film.  Follow us on twitter: Stain on Twitter! You can read up on the progress of the project, read cast and crew bios, and follow our progress with our goal of entering film festivals. Maybe you can catch a screening at a festival near you! Any help is always appreciated, but for now, unless we meet our financial goal, these dreams will remain dreams. Help us move the words from the page and turn these dreams into reality!
