Short Summary

Hello, my name is Kwame and I am here on Indiegogo looking for your help.  I've been a radio announcer for the past 13 years and I thought it was time that I pursue a goal I've had for years.  When I was living in Edmonton I got to know a few NHL players and started to really appreciate them as people and athletes but in the back of my mind I wondered why not many black athletes played the game and more importantly I wondered why there was not much information about those who played and the history behind them.  So for the past year I've been interviewing and learning more that I will put together in this documentary.  I have been putting in my ALL to complete this project that is one of a kind and has NEVER been done before.  Your contributions no matter how big or small will help me make this happen.  I will be able to complete the rest of my interviews and go into post production.  You are a very important key to getting to the next level so let me thank you in advance.

What We Need & What You Get

WHAT’S THE MONEY FOR?

Currently, we are in production and have shot over 20 hours of footage but there is still more work to do.  We are looking to raise $40,000, which will get us out of our current stage of production and get us into post-production.  More specifically the money will go to:

- Travel costs for the crew

- Crew costs for labour and meals

- Equipment rentals and costs, such as light rentals, buying hard drives, etc

- Insurance, which will cover liability issues, and gear rental issues

- Location fees, such as any costs associated with shooting in venues like ice rinks, museums, etc.

The reason we are only asking for funds to complete our production phase is because we have already acquired most of the financing we need for post-production.  In May of this year, we entered the pitch competition at the Innoversity Summit in Toronto (http://www.innoversitysummit.com/#home) and won first prize in the unscripted category.  The prize package included these rewards:

$20,000 in postproduction at Urban Post

$2,000 from Shaw Media

$7,000 in production equipment rental at William F. White studios http://www.whites.com

1-year membership at Charles street video

47th WorldFest Houston Texas Film Festival screening for standalone/one off production.  Which means a guaranteed screening date for our film at this festival.

As you can see we have done a lot of work on our own with our own resources but we need your help to get us closer to the finish line.  For a donation as low $10 you can be apart of this journey that will bring to life a documentary that has never been done before which will honour the contributions of black athletes in hockey’s past, present and future.

The Team

Well besides myself I am working with a few other film makers.

Michael P. Douglas (Producer/Director)

Michael P. Douglas brings with him a true artistic vision to Long Format Films, Music Videos and Commercials.  After winning the City TV Award and Scholarship at Ryerson University, Mark Dailey said it best “Michael Douglas is going to be a household name”.

He was right!  Michael P. Douglas is a trailblazer, Producing and Directing over 100 Music Videos for broadcast on MTV and MuchMusic while being recognized by the industry receiving numerous awards and nominations for his outstanding body of work.

Michael appeared in a half hour segment Men In Music 2002-03, as well as a NFB documentary “Breakin’ In – The Making of a Hip Hop Dancer” 2005.

Along with producing and directing over one hundred music videos, Michael co-produced Lolo's Child which was a feature film about a young man named Junior inspired by his father's death embarks on composing the soundtrack to his life.  The film won the Ishmael Bernal Award for Young Cinema at the Cinemanila International Film Festival.  Michael owns and operates SuperFly Media Company, which is a young and fresh boutique Film & Television Production Company specializing in developing, directing and producing some of the most spectacular motion picture imagery spanning multiple formats.

Ricardo Diaz, csc (Cinematographer)

Ricardo essentially “grew up” in the film business.  As a teenager, he worked as an extra in a variety of movies.  He soon discovered that it wasn’t in front of the camera, but rather behind the camera that grabbed his attention.  Fast forward to his experience in Film School.  Like most young aspiring filmmakers, he wanted to shoot music videos. He graduated with high expectations.  As with most professions, he had to start somewhere and Ricardo’s “somewhere” was at a well-known production house where he worked as an equipment manager. His experience only fueled the fire further to succeed!  Ricardo and some friends started a production house of their own. He gained valuable experience in every aspect of production.  Today, Ricardo is a husband and the proud father of three children. He volunteers his time and energy to helping aspiring filmmakers. Ricardo specializes in feature films, documentaries, lifestyle T.V commercials and of course music videos. He is an expert in all formats. Ricardo is known for his talent for lighting and for his quiet and professional demeanor on set; while having fun at the same time. If you know Ricardo, then you know his love of “Juicy Fruit”! His talents have not gone unnoticed; on the contrary, Ricardo has been recognized in the industry and has many awards under his belt. He’s come a long way from that teenage boy who was just another extra.

The Impact

Like I said a project like this has never been done before, I love the game of hockey and I love history so putting these two things together is a no brainer.  I hope you will be apart of this project, I believe once done it will educate, inspire and pay respect to some athletes who persevered through adversity to open the door for young athletes of colour to play hockey.  And hey, maybe gain some new fans to this great sport.  I can't do this project on my own; I need and appreciate any help given.  So again thank you.

HELP US GET THE WORD OUT.

Talk about it, post about it, tweet about it.  Please help us spread the word about SOUL ON ICE: PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE.  Even if you can’t support us financially (which we hope you can) you can still help by letting people in your social network know about this project that celebrates diversity in Hockey.  Thank you for visiting us on Indiegogo, we appreciate you taking the time out to consider our campaign.

One Love.
