Solidarity Fund for Seattle Teachers Boycotting the MAP Test

Help us raise money to support teachers facing possible disciplinary action for boycotting the MAP test.

Short Summary

On January 9, 2013, teachers at Garfield High School in Seattle unanimously announced their intention to boycott the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test.  They also published a letter describing their reasons for engaging in the boycott.  Since the initial announcement of a boycott by Garfield High School teachers, a number of other schools in Seattle have joined the boycott, including Ballard High School, The Center School, Chief Sealth International High School, and Orca K-8 School.  Educators, professors, parents, and community members across the country have written in support of the boycott.  Thousands of people have signed an online petition to the Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools.

What We Need

The Seattle School District originally threatened MAP test boycotting teachers with a 10 day suspension with out pay.  Since then they have backed off that threat verbally although nothing has been rescinded in writing.  What was made clear was that there would be "consequences" for our boycott.  We hope we won't have to raise money for suspended teachers, but we are waiting to find out what the consequences will be. For right now, our effort will be focused on raising funds to publicize the boycott and organize broader solidarity.

Although we have set a minimum goal of $1000, we hope to raise as much as possible.  The more funds we have, the more we will be able to do to build this campaign and support the participating teachers.
