THE LOCATION: BOIÇUCANGA, SP, BR

A sleepy coastal village populated by surfers and sinners, saints and stoners. Popular during the tourist season. Occasionally you will encounter someone tripping balls, telling you that Obama is trying to recruit him into the Air Force.

THE STORY

Catalau, center. The man with the death wish, who was consumed by fame and succumbed to addiction. Once a heavy metal rock star in Brazil during the military dictatorship, he played for adoring crowds who craved something real under the oppression of the government. But performance left him empty, he filled the void with drugs and sex, up to the very brink of death-in a puddle of piss and vomit.

Then he filled the void with religion. Catalau retained his stage name, but now his stage was the pulpit. Performing baptisms in the ocean or the jungle, he began converting other wayward addicts and misfits. Surfers and stoners form the core of his church, Bola de Neve (Snowball). The transformation was by no means easy, involving being disowned by his own mother, forced to sleep in churches, struggling to stay clean, trying to find a pure path despite a life of debauchery.

Marriage helped. Starting a family gives a certain sense of purpose, and forming a flock builds an even larger family, a need to be righteous- if only for the sake of appearances. And it is quite a family.

And now what? Catalau continues preaching in the jungle, spending time alone in his workshop making soap and perfume, carving surfboards, crafting guitars.

We want to document this journey of a life lived radically, to discover the nature of fame, addiction, redemption, and despair. To examine religion, family, community, and psychosis. To reveal the spirit of man and his home.
