SNAP 2 IT!
SNAP 2 It! is a project of the St. Louis Farmers Market Association and is the first step to establishing a double bucks program for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients at farmers markets in the St. Louis region. SNAP is also commonly referred to as Food Stamps or EBT (electronic benefits transfer). The program provides incentives to encourage healthy eating choices for SNAP recipients, directly
benefiting low-income families as well as local farmers. We plan on raising $3000 to establish the program in 2014. All money raised will go directly to increasing the buying power of SNAP recipients at each participating market.
Participating farmers markets include: Cherokee St. International Farmers Market, EarthDance Farms (at Ferguson Farmers Market), International Institute of St. Louis Global Farms, North City Farmers' Market, Schlafly Farmers Market, Tower Grove Farmers' Market* and Webster Groves Farmers Market.
* Tower Grove Farmers' Market will not receive any of the 2014 SNAP 2 It! money as they already have their own grant for matching dollars this season.
Note: Monies donated will go to Old North St. Louis Restoration Group, a verified 501(c)(3) non-profit, which will administer the matching dollar program for 2014.
How Does It Work?SNAP recipients bring their EBT card to the participating farmers market booth. Their card is run for any amount they wish and up to $10 per week is matched ($10 will be the limit for the 2014 season, but we expect it to increase it to $20-25 in 2015). If they run $10 on their card, they receive $20 in SNAP tokens to spend at any market booth on SNAP-eligible items. The farmers are then paid by the market from the SNAP funds.
The Impact By helping us reach our $3,000 goal (or greater), you will support the
efforts of St. Louis area farmers markets to help more people get access to locally grown, healthy food. With $3000, 300 families will be able to get a $10 match while shopping at the farmers market during the 2014 season. The program encourages low-income consumers to spend their SNAP benefits to purchase healthy produce, simultaneously
increasing the income of our local farmers.
Since 2010, an average of over 900,000 individuals (and over 400,000 households) in Missouri have received SNAP benefits each month. That amounts to over $1.4 billion each year spent in Missouri at SNAP eligible retailers. In the St. Louis area, SNAP retailers include grocers, gas stations and convenience stores. While grocery stores provide access to fresh, healthy food, many communities do not have one nearby. That means a lot of SNAP money in our region is spent at places with little to no healthy food options. SNAP 2 It! will help funnel some of that money to healthier options, ones that also increase our local food economy.
If we reach or exceed our goal, we also plan on applying for a grant from the Missouri Department of Agriculture that could double the impact of your donations (up to $5000). As we plan for future seasons, we are partnering with other organizations that have established SNAP double dollar programs in other cities. We hope we will follow a similar path as the Beans & Greens program in Kansas City, which quickly grew from having only two markets taking SNAP to over $150,000 a year in matching dollars at 15-plus markets. You can help establish this important program in St. Louis.
