Sharing Innovation for a Planet in Need
When we first started working on the island of Pemba, off the Tanzanian coast, things were different. The entire eastern half of the island was deforested and most of the island's food was imported. Now Pemba is a model of sustainability. Since 2008, one million trees have been planted for fruit, timber and conservation. The soils have been mended and over 100 acres of food producing crops have been sown between rows of planted trees. Drinking water is harvested from the rain and electricity is generated from the sun. Pembans have innovated the way they grow food and how they cook the food they grow.
Pembans have changed their island.
Now it's time we work together to change the world. By sharing Pemba's work with the world we can inspire the scale of environmental change that our planet needs. Through indiegogo, we're trying to raise $8,000 in order to build a Rural Innovation Campus that will allow us to share our work with community leaders from around the world. Based on our past success in Pemba, the European Union wants to continue to support community-led innovation and is prepared to match every dollar we raise with $9. If we raise $8,000, we end up with $80,000.
We need your help. We've been given the opportunity to build a campus that will allow us to expand our work, but 10% of the funds must be raised through donations. If we don't raise our end of the bargain, we don't get the funds.
Please share our vision. We're flipping the traditional development model upside down by placing rural communities in a role of leadership and expertise. We believe that people around the world can work together to find innovative solutions to some of humanity's toughest challenges. We believe that people can work together to make our world a better place; they just need the chance.
Rural Innovation Campus Concept Design
Imagine if the solution to climate change came for the people that need it the most?
Rural Innovation Campus is completed, community leaders from around the
world will be able to travel to Pemba, see CFI-style change for themselves and then return home to adapt Pemban innovation to meet their
own community needs.
Your funds will go to:
- Build workshop spaces
- Provide bursaries for 2,000 Pembans
- Create demonstration gardens and forests
- Demonstrate solar energy
- Establish a model apiary
- Employ local experts to deliver training
- Pilot new innovations both on site and within communities
- Share innovations with the world
