About Shakespeare's VILLAINS

Imagine if Shakespeare's best villains were taken out of their respective plays, reassembled Frankenstein-style, and finally got to be the focus of their own stories. The California Shakespeare Ensemble does just that in Shakespeare's VILLAINS as they weave three of the Bard's finest antagonists into one engaging 70-minute show, using only Shakespeare's original words.

The show follows three of Shakespeare's villains--Shylock (Merchant of Venice), Macbeth (Macbeth), and Tybalt (Romeo and Juliet)--using Shakespeare's original words and their own separate stories, but with a new adaptation and edit by CSE Artistic Director Brian Elerding.

What the hell is going on?

The show sold out its run in Los Angeles at the end of 2013. Let's take it to the world at the Ediburgh Fringe Festival in 2014!

Shakespeare's VILLAINS hit a sweet spot for our company by providing extraordinary characters to brilliant actors. Mixing three of Shakespeare's stories into one play turned out to be a big success.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the biggest and most extraordinary event for independent theater in the world. Over a million people attend from all over the globe, and some of the best small, funky companies bring their projects there to share. We'd like to join that gang.

After the Edinburgh Fringe, Shakespeare's VILLAINS will return to Los Angeles for a full run.

What We Need & What You Get

The CSE has never asked for donations before; we've always funded our productions from ticket revenue and commissions...we're fundraising NOW because this is way bigger than anything we've done before, and we're growing!

The funding goes to everything from venue rental to travel arrangements to promotion. A lot of factors have to come together for our three week odyssey, which is why getting ourselves sorted financially is crucial. By donating to this campaign you'll bring Shakespeare's VILLAINS to the international stage.

By supporting the project, you can also get perks like tickets to a performance of the show in Los Angeles, all the way up to private performances. If you're more of a merch-minded type, we've got mugs, shirts and scripts available too!

If, by some misfortune, we don't fulfill our goal on Indiegogo and literally every last thing falls through for this project financially, left-over funds will go to the California Shakespeare Ensemble for our local remount of VILLAINS, and everyone still gets their nifty perks. So it's a win-win situation!

The Impact

The impact of your donation is literally the difference between going to Edinburgh for the Fringe Fest on one hand, and not going on the other.
