RICHARD III AT FAIRY LAKE

Pell-Mell Players presents Richard III at Fairy Lake (in Newmarket, Ontario), with 2 performances FREE to the public.

“March on, join bravely, let us to’t pell-mell! If not to heaven, hand in hand to hell!”

Our company is composed entirely of committed volunteers who are all local residents of the Newmarket area. Our diverse experiences with Arts Huron, Pickering College, Resurgence Theatre and other local theatre programs have moved us to continue a life in the theatre right here in our home-town.

WHAT: --   RICHARD III (by William Shakespeare)

                  2 live, open-air performances

                  FREE to the public

WHERE: -- Fairy Lake Amphitheatre, Newmarket, Ontario Canada

WHEN: --   Tuesday, August 6th, 2013 – 7:30 p.m.

                  AND

                  Thursday, August 8th, 2013 – 7:30 p.m.

HOW: --    With the support of our patrons and sponsors!

The words of William Shakespeare belong to everyone and our community has been so nurturing to its young artists that we would like to give back with free theatre.

Richard III was in the news this year for the first time in centuries, bringing added relevance to Shakespeare’s darkly comic portrayal of the first, true supervillain in its title character. Young audiences in the Newmarket area are primed to have a young anti-hero in their midst.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT …

In Shakespeare’s time, plays were performed not only for the nobles who could afford a cushion, but for the groundlings that paid a penny and were treated to the same spectacle as the royal court. We’re reaching high and low, the same way Shakespeare did, and offering our two performances in August, open and FREE-to-the-public on a “pay-what-you-can” basis. And for this, we need patrons!

Your support makes it possible for us to offer two performances FREE to the public at the Fairy Lake Amphitheatre (Newmarket, Ontario).

It’s on-ground seating in the beautiful amphitheatre area of Fairy Lake – so don’t forget to BYOB (Bring Your Own BLANKET), lawn chairs or pillows to maximize your comfort and enjoyment of this unique outdoor theatre experience.

We are offering rewards of two types: Production Rewards (related to how the production was developed), and Audience Rewards (to make your performance attendance as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.) Donations from supporters will be rewarded at different levels as outlined in the Campaign Perks.

We understand that not all our patrons will be able to attend the Newmarket performances, and we appreciate your support as a patron of our production. If you plan to attend one (or more) of the performances, please let us know (richardatfairylake@gmail.com) and your rewards will be waiting for you at the Amphitheatre when you arrive.

YOUR PATRONAGE SUPPORTS …

Our fund raising target looks to cover the direct costs for two performances in our local community in August 2013.

If we exceed our funding target, any additional funds raised will be used to produce a short film about Richard’s relationship with his wife Lady Anne. If funding is available, video production is scheduled for autumn 2013, at the Sharon Temple in Sharon, Ontario.

Our abridged script takes Shakespeare’s almost four-hour epic, and condenses it for an audience familiar with fast-paced TV dramas or action movies. This has streamlined the text into a form that is entertaining from beginning to end, for Shakespeare aficionados and newcomers alike.

We hope that our work this summer will provide a template to encourage other local artists to perform plays in public on a volunteer basis regardless of the presence of established theatre companies. The torch has been passed down to a new generation of young artists and it is our responsibility to keep theatre alive in our area. We have embraced this responsibility wholeheartedly and hope our work might inspire other artists to do the same.

The Pell-Mell Players would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the members of our community that have brought this project to life. We are eager to show our gratitude to the community by sharing some of the most beautiful poetry ever written and one of the most enticing characters in all of Shakespeare.

We hope that this project will be the continuation of Shakespeare at Fairy Lake -- one of Newmarket’s greatest traditions -- and we would like to thank you for your support.

“March on, join bravely, let us to’t pell-mell! If not to heaven, hand in hand to hell!”
