THE THEME

LOVE, perhaps the strongest of human emotions, is also perhaps the one most sought after. The subject of countless tales through history, it manifests itself in a myriad of ways: as the love between a parent and child, the love for one's country, one's neighbour, but never in as strong a way as when it occurs between two adults. It is the love that dreams and lives are built on and its loss threatens the very life of anyone who has tasted it.

How does one cope after losing this love? How does one cope with the grief of a lost loved one after many years of companionship? How can we deal with that loss and the longing to be somehow reunited with our lost love?

The LOSS of a loved one is another central theme in our film. It is a human experience we probably all go through at certain points in our lives and yet little can prepare us for it.

I feel that these themes are strongly linked because I believe that only love can truly prepare someone for loss. My personal experience in losing loved ones is what has in fact pushed me to explore these themes and the link present between them.

Gozo will provide us with an idyllic backdrop to explore this story and these emotions. For a lot of people, Gozo is simply a calm and quiet place where one can enjoy the sun, the sea and the countryside. Yet of course, even within such a peaceful setting, lives are lived and people go through life-changing moments; relationships are forged and lost.

Although the story can be set anywhere in the world, I believe that by setting this story in Malta and specifically in Gozo, we can introduce a global audience to a world that they have never seen before. Gozo's charm adds a lot of value to the film and helps to expose the language and culture to a wider audience.

I believe that 'Sħab' has the potential to reach a wide audience indeed; the core themes presented in this film can touch many hearts whilst promoting the still-developing Maltese film industry and our own culture, in a way never accomplished before on film.

I hope that you will be touched by this project as others already have been and that you might also help us in this production.

Kind Regards,

FILM SYNOPSIS

ĠUŻEPPI is an old farmer who has been married to Rita since the age of 18; his wife is his world. Even in old age, their marriage still holds the spark of young love. They taunted and made fun of each other; so much so that outsiders would think they were actually fighting. Despite the many years spent together, they celebrate their anniversary with great enthusiasm: counting the years together, dancing to their favourite tunes and welcoming each new year sitting at the edge of the cliffs by the beautiful coast as the morning fog washes over them. To them, heaven could not take any other shape or form.

When Rita dies, Ġużeppi finds himself alone for the first time. As he struggles to find a new rhyme in his life, his son and grandson unexpectedly intrude in it.

The struggles they go through themselves push Ġużeppi towards a journey that will fulfill his wife’s life-long wish and on their anniversary make him take a leap of faith into the clouds to join his wife in eternity.

WHY SUPPORT THIS SHORT FILM

Across time, civilisations have passed on their culture and beliefs through stories in many different forms. Today, film is one of the strongest and most versatile mediums through which culture is being explored, communicated and most of all preserved.

The Maltese culture is perhaps the most underrepresented in this medium. So far no Maltese film has been distributed in commercial terms, most productions being limited to small obscure festivals and local cinemas and reaching small specialised audiences. Meanwhile, a cursory glance at European cinema shows that every other country has presented films that define generations, expose painful truths or celebrate the beauty of their culture.

We believe that it is now time to act, to find ways to tell our stories and share them with our European neighbours and preserve them for future generations, but as you may know film is an expensive medium that requires a lot of passion, hours of dedication, work and costly equipment in order to reach wide audiences. This is why we need your support; to help us give the world a small peek of life here in Malta (and Gozo).

THE FUNDING

BREAKING into the film industry is difficult and often prohibited by the costs involved in putting together a quality production. Over the past two years we have invested heavily in the development of 'Sħab', a process often overlooked by the Maltese industry.

The process involved working with different writers to get the story developed into a functioning screenplay as well as attending a script development workshop in Luxembourg and a pitching conference in Maribor, Slovenia as part of the European Short Pitch.

These trips proved to be important milestones for the project as they demonstrated that there is a strong European interest in the story and its setting whilst helping us to understand what elements needed to be refined for the script in order to be accessible to people unfamiliar with our culture.

To date, together with our partners we have invested over €20,000 in the development of the project.

The production costs of this project are currently estimated at around €55,000. Although this is a significant sum, one has to bear in mind that it is a 15 minute film project and considering that 70 minute films often cost over a million Euros, our production has a very modest budget.

So far we have raised 32% of the funds through a grant from the Malta Film Fund and 8% through a small grant from Invex Malta. 53% of the production costs will be put up by Shadeena and our production partners.

The remaining costs need to be raised for the film to be completed successfully. With your generous help, we strongly believe that this is an amount that we can surely achieve.

The money we raise through this campaign will go towards ensuring that we can complete the film to the best possible quality and on time as well as have the resources needed to make sure that the film travels wide.

This is not a 'for profit' project. As many film makers know, it is rare, almost impossible to make any return from a short film. We do it for the love of story-telling.
