What is the Secular Hub?

At the most basic level, the Secular Hub is a meeting place for secular minded groups in the Denver area. But the Secular Hub has the potential to be much more than this. Our vision for the Secular Hub is that it will be the center, or hub, of the secular community in Denver. It will be a place to see a science lecture, watch a movie with friends, participate in community service or charitable events, or just to meet up with like-minded friends. For some, it will be a haven as they try to escape from a destructive religious background. We hope that the Secular Hub will become a model for similar projects in other cities in the United States and beyond. We already are off to a good start. We’ve had a great first year, but we will need your help to continue.

How did the Secular Hub start?

The Secular Hub opened its doors on Darwin Day, February 12, 2013, but the idea started long before that. In 2011, five leaders of secular groups in Denver got together to discuss plans for something that had never been attempted before, a completely grass-roots, community-driven meeting hall for the non-religious. Churches are great at forming communities, something which has always been lacking for the "nones". So we decided to do something about it. We were able to find a group of generous donors, our "founders" who shared our vision and were willing to put up the first round of donations. With this initial seed money, we were able to rent a space and get it furnished and fixed up to form a comfortable meeting space. We've accomplished our first goal and now we're ready to move on from there.

Why does the Secular Hub need my help?

As a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, the Secular Hub will always rely on donations for a portion of its income. However, our goal is to reduce that dependency to a minimum and get most of our funding through paid memberships and concession sales. We expect to be at that point by our third year, but we’re not there yet and we need your help to make it through our critical second year.

What will my donation mean to the Secular Hub?

The Secular Hub's base expenses come to about $2,000 per month. We are budgeting another $6,000 for miscellaneous expenses in order to grow the Hub. The Secular Hub is completely volunteer driven, none of us take a salary. So our $15,000 goal represents half of our budget. We expect to make up the rest of it through local donors, memberships and concession sales. By our third year, we plan to be nearly self-sufficient. Your donation will help make this goal a reality.
