Hi! I’m Brian Defferding – author, artist and publisher of the gothic horror graphic novel series “School.” This is my Indiegogo fundraiser for the sixth issue of the series.
For those of you who are not familiar with the story, I’ll give you a little background. The story centers around a 12-year-old girl named Lindsay, it begins with her “waking up” inside an elementary school, covered in blood. Furthermore, she realizes she’s not just covered in blood, she is actually dead and is a ghost, ever-living inside the walls of the school, with little memory of her past. This story is about her recollecting her past, unraveling the mystery behind her death, and meeting some other ghostly friends – and enemies – along the way. It’s creepy, it’s frightening, it’s tragic, it’s something COMPLETELY different from any other comic you have ever read or seen.
This book started out as my senior project at Minneapolis College of Art and Design all the way back to 2001. I got 12 pages done; almost one-half of the issue. After I graduated, I put the pages away, forgetting about it for a few years. When I moved back to my hometown in Wisconsin in 2003, after unpacking my art I found those pages again; and realized this was a great idea with so much potential to be a wonderful story. Thus, I picked up where I left off, and my first 32 page self-published, self-distributed comic came out in June 2005. I have been at it ever since, working on it when I can, selling and promoting it at conventions around the US.

Risks & Challenges
This comic series is not carried through any major distributor - specifically, Diamond Comics. In comics, if your book is not carried through Diamond's catalog to all comic retailers, it likely won't see print because retailers will never know your comic exists. However thanks to years of promoting at pop culture conventions, I have assembled a fanbase and it's constantly building. With the help of donors, I can set aside money to attend more conventions around the US, maybe even the globe, to bring my comic to the masses without the need for a major distributor.
I already have almost all the art done; I just need to scan the art and design the cover/inside cover pages. The biggest challenge for me is time to scan all the art into files for the printer; I work in a size that requires me to scan the art from four pieces, then assemble it all together through Photoshop. Scanning 120 pages is quite the task. I will be spending a lot of time in front of the computer with spirals in my eyes, ha! The fortunate thing is, this is probably the toughest part of the job. Everything else will be fun and exciting.
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you can't contribute, that doesn't mean you can't help:
- Ask folks to get the word out and make some noise about this campaign. This is an independent creative endeavor and I would love to be heard!
- Use the Indiegogo share tools! Put this link in your social media news feeds, anything that can bring some clicks towards this project will be a positive effort!
Last but not least - THANK YOU for supporting independent comics!
