“Scenes of a Sexual Nature” is mostly based on a series of seven loosely related stories of couples in Hampstead Heath Park in north London. The scenes appear out of sequence and jump back and forth between one story and another. Sex and love. Some seek it, some need it, some spurn it and some pay for it, but we’re all involved in it.
There are two amazing stories on this play besides the one written. The first is how we actually got to make this play happen, and the second, how we got the venue where we are performing it.
In 2010, I watched the movie “Scenes of a Sexual Nature.” I thought it would be a brilliant theater play, checked it out and found out it was an original script from Aschlin Ditta. I did my research and contacted his agent to ask for the rights of the play to adapt it to theater in Spanish, because my clout is stronger in Venezuela, which is my home country, Argentina, Colombia and Spain. That began almost two years of sending emails back and forth with no outcome. In 2012, very frustrated, I decided to look for Mr. Ditta himself via Twitter. I’ve been in the online marketing and social media industry for many years — that’s what I do. I found two Aschlin Dittas, one of whom happened to be the one, and within a day I had the development agreement in my hands. THANK YOU SOCIAL MEDIA! I adapted Ditta’s movie script into a play, and it was ready to be produced in 2013.
Last year my marketing agency, the Mini Agency, shifted to being a resource-based agency. That means we provide clients with our online marketing services, and they provide us with their resources. In some cases, money is another resource.
And here comes the second …
In June 2013, I started working with Teatro SEA as their marketing director, and the resource-based deal we worked out was for us to give them our services in exchange for two months a year in their theater. This new variable led me to readapt the play into English to produce it in New York City at SEA. Aschlin Ditta agreed, and voila!
Teatro SEA has an amazing three-year-old space in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Pictures below!
Why we are in Indiegogo?
Producing this play has been a collaborative effort between actors, crew and production team. Because the theater is being paid with the Mini Agency’s services, we did not need money upfront to book the space, but like every production, we have expenses to cover.
As we strongly believe in the power of collaboration and the willingness of nice people, we believe there is nothing better than crowdfunding to go through this experience.
This play costs a lot more money than $6,000 to produce, but because of our deal, this is what we need to break even. This amount will be used to cover some of the production expenses, including scenery, salaries and marketing.
Our experiment is to show people that under the collaboration wing, we all win. When we started producing this play, we wanted to do an Equity Showcase — we found plenty of bureaucracy, money requirements and less-than-fair policies behind Equity’s protocol. So, because “life is about creating yourself,” we asked ourselves, “Can’t we do this by tapping into our networks? Is it possible to build a production supported by regular, everyday people and make our living out of it?” To all these questions, our answer was YES, and here we are. Every penny we make will be split among actors, crew and production team. We have created perks for every actor to encourage their friends and family to contribute to their craft.
Expenses and Budget
“Scenes of a Sexual Nature” has been a long and amazing process. Our goal is to make people ask questions of themselves about basic human relationships, the purpose of life and happiness.
Therefore, our work does not end here — we are looking forward into the future. We are planning on taking this play to the Fringe Festival during the summer with a larger budget and more experience under our belts.

Risks and Challenges.
As in any other production, our biggest challenge is to produce a high-quality play with limited resources. We’ve been struggling to set everything up, but we have a committed team and really good friends who are willing and able to help by contributing to our show.
