Because of budget cuts, Chappelow's dance program has been eliminated.
We have less than 30 days to raise the money to fund the program for the 2013-2014 school year.
Without your help, dance at Chappelow could be gone forever.
Chappelow K-8 Arts Magnet School is the only school in all of Weld County to offer dance as a year-long class. It is this passion for the arts that has helped Chappelow, its students, and staff become one of the highest academically performing schools in Greeley, Colorado.
Chappelow is part of the Weld County District 6 school system, the district has a free and reduced lunch rate of 62%. Many of our families have a hard time making ends meet and can simply not afford private dance classes. For those students, the Chappelow dance program is their only opportunity to dance. The program is offered to all Chappelow middle school students regardless of their physical, mental, or emotional limitations. All students perform together on stage. The inclusive nature of the art form allows students who are secluded during the school day to befriend their peers. Students who have never felt their worth have found value in dance.
Our dance program is an essential investment into our community’s physical and mental health and wellness. Chappelow does not have any sports extracurriculars for our students. Students who wish to participate in these activities are required to do so through another school in the district. Dance helps our students fulfill their physical activity needs.
Saving dance at Chappelow is more than saving one class. There are over 100 middle school students that have registered for dance classes at Chappelow in the coming school year, these students will not have access to a form of artistic expression that they crave. The other arts classes will suffer due to a combination of overcrowding and student disinterest. Both Chappelow’s students and its legacy of excellence will be threatened.
The arts are always the first thing to be sacrificed during budget cuts. We've seen it time and time again all over the country. We're asking you to stand with us, to stand behind our students and say that ART MATTERS.
What will the money be used for?
$45,000 - (Indiegogo fees) = $41,850
$41,850 - $38,800 (2012-2013 dance teacher salary with a Master's degree in Teaching. See: Column MA, row D) = $3,050.
$3,050 remainder will go towards purchasing music, paying to ship perks and purchasing costumes for students that are unable to afford them. Previously, these things came directly out of the dance teachers own pocket.
If we do not meet our goal, all funds contributed will still be used to provide dance education to Chappelow students in some capacity.
