Radiation is of growing concern on our planet. In fact, it's an inescapable, very real threat to our health and safety. Why are we not hearing more about it? There is a huge amount of denial going on. Now we can come together and, by contributing just $10 each, we can do our part to bring the technology into the world that will allow us to stay safe and healthy in the face of the coming crisis. This campaign is about putting a highly accurate, affordable radiation detector which measures specific isotopes and their relative levels into the hands of people like you and me.
But it is about much more than that...
How is this campaign about more than just another product?
If, like me, you are one of the many people who has been aware of the radiation issue and its potential impact on our continued health and safety, you've probably been experiencing a sense of helplessness. We've all been wondering, “What can I do?”
Now there is something concrete we can do. We will be able to contribute radiation readings to a growing database from all over the Pacific Rim, and all over the planet. We, the people, can build a system of information sharing which cannot be ignored.
We will compile the data and serve as a hub for conversation, community, and awareness around this vital issue. We pledge to make this information public, thereby applying pressure to the powers that be to act to protect us and the planet.
Who created this project?
My name is Brian Lundquist. I am the Publisher of Nanotechnology Now and the founder of Radiative Protection Development, Inc. I want to tell you about my company’s important project: the RPD Radiation Detector. It is our goal to educate consumers about the dangers of radiation exposure, but also to put an affordable tool in your hands that will empower you to stay safe and healthy. To bring this product to the world, we need your help.
Right now, if you were to buy a device that accurately detects radiation in the water, food or soil around you, you would be looking at spending several thousand dollars. The device created by Radiative Protection Development will not cost $5000, or even $1000 — in fact, we are planning to offer this revolutionary device for just $200.
Why Is This Radiation Detector Different from What Is Already on the Market?
There are no other products that are as affordable as this one, while providing the accuracy needed to keep you and your loved ones safe. Harnessing the power of nanotechnology makes this device possible — and because of the advances in this technology, we will be offering a truly one-of-a-kind product. Nothing you can reasonably buy today will give you the specific information on what isotopes are in your soil, food or liquids. Our product will measure these isotopes and their relative levels, making it different from any other radiation detector under $5000. Our team at Texas A&M, led by Dr. Jorge Seminario, is doing groundbreaking work, and this campaign is about supporting their research to make this product a reality by the end of 2015.
Seminario and his team are developing nano sensors that can detect tiny amounts of radiation- as tiny as a single molecule. Here's a link to an article on their recent work: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/jp408247nRadiation Is Out There
You might assume you don’t need a radiation detector, but radiation is out there, especially in the Pacific Rim. Remember Fukushima? Since the Fukushima nuclear plant was devastated by a tsunami in 2011, radioactive water has been seeping into the Pacific Ocean at a rate of 400 metric tons every day for the past three years. This continues today.
Fukushima doesn’t just affect the people near the nuclear plant. The waters of the Pacific Ocean are contaminated, and already salmon caught in the waters off the coast of California are testing positive for Cesium 134, the exact radioactive isotope that is the “fingerprint” of Fukushima. That means the water, soil and even some of the food in California could be contaminated — and people are eating it.
There is a wide range of information and misinformation out there about radiation, but unfortunately, we may not know the extent of the effects of Fukushima and other radiation-related events for many years to come. Our best defense is to take matters into our own hands, and test our own food, beverages, and soil.
Why Should We Be Concerned About Radiation?
Radiation is toxic to the human body — especially in younger children. Radiation damages the living cells inside your body and kills the DNA cell structure. The amount of damage will depend on how much exposure you have, but often the damage is permanent. Some cells are more sensitive to radiation exposure too, but you might not notice the effects of your exposure for years.
The biggest risk of prolonged exposure to radiation is cancer. In fact, the cancers that are caused by radiation often don’t show up until years after the exposure has occurred — and by the time they are diagnosed, are often too far advanced to be treated. As the dose of radiation increases, the chances of contracting cancer do too.
If you and your family eat or drink contaminated food or water, you are increasing the chances you and your loved ones will develop cancer or other debilitating illnesses because of that exposure.
How the RPD Radiation Detector Will Protect You
RPD is spearheading this project. We have partnered with Texas A&M University to develop the product and make it available to the public. Dr. Jorge Seminario of the Material Sciences and Engineering Department at Texas A&M University is heading our highly talented research team.
We plan to have our product released to the market by the end of 2015. While there are other radiation detectors out there, they are prohibitively expensive. Detectors that have comparable pricing to our detector simply are not effective — to be frank, they are a waste of money. Most radiation detectors available to consumers cannot detect the different types of radiation, and they cannot accurately measure how severe the exposure is.
We plan to develop a game-changing radiation detector. It will accurately measure the levels of radiation in food, soil and water. It will interface with your smartphone to provide you with information regarding the types of isotopes and the levels of exposure. And, even better, it will only cost $200. But if you want to be a part of the project moving forward, and are not ready to contribute at that level, $10 or more from each person who reads this will go far in getting us there. Contribute what you can to make this a reality!
The detector will be user-friendly; anyone can operate it. Most importantly, it will help you and your family stay safe and healthy.
Ways to use the RPD Radiation Detector
There are many uses for the detector, including:
Testing food from the farmer's market or grocery store
Testing beverages you consume anywhere
Testing any soil amendments before adding them
Testing animal feed before purchasing
Ensuring while traveling that your food and beverages are safe
