Haitian youth learn photography and media arts as tools for storytelling, cultural preservation and environmental advocacy.

One Bird collaborates with existing community-based organizations to provide media arts training for young people.

In the summer of 2012, One Bird partnered with Mejham, a Haitian youth empowerment organization, to provide a two-week media arts training for 56 children in Rivière Froide, teaching photography, book arts and creative writing. This partnership was established through Haitian Association President Yvelyne Germain-McCarthy, who grew up in the Rivière Froide neighborhood just west of Port-au-Prince and understood the need for summer arts programs for youth.

According to Yvelyne, the majority of school-age children in Haiti cannot afford to attend summer programs, and the free programs that are offered are well beyond capacity. A summer media arts workshop engages young people in a productive activity, while teaching tangible skills.

"Photography provides an outlet for kids to look at their environment from different perspectives and to share their views with others. They learn about each other as they explain why they shot a scene, person or object. For many of them, a photograph of themselves from One Bird may well be the only one they will have of themselves. Thus, One Bird photographs, in essence, also provides a historical portrait of the summer for that year."  Yvelyne Germain-McCarthy

We are raising funds to return to Haiti in the summer of 2013 to provide a second media arts training for new and returning students in Rivière Froide. The money raised from this campaign will be used for airfare, lodging (this year we are trying to secure lodging with community members), translator and teacher stipends, art supplies, photographic materials and equipment, student lunches and final prints for an exhibition. One Bird invests in local communities by supporting and hiring individuals from the neighborhood and organizations where each training takes place. This budget is based on three instructors working with six translators and 50 students.

If you help us raise at least $8,000 then we are going to Haiti! If we raise $8,000 we'll be on our way, but will not be able to pay our three instructors and teaching aide or purchase camera equipment to leave behind with our partner organization, Mejham, in Haiti.  If we raise less than $8,000 please be assured that you are donating to a good cause and the funds received will go towards future programming efforts for the New Orleans Kid Camera Project and future One Bird projects.

One Bird is led by professionals in arts management, photography and social work. In addition to the Rivière Froide Kid Camera Project, past One Bird projects include The New Orleans Kid Camera Project in New Orleans, LA and The Tibetan Community Camera Project in Dharamshala, India.

If you can't make a monetary donation, please feel free to contact us with other helpful suggestions at info@kidcameraproject.org

We accept: functioning digital camera donations, words of encouragement and if you believe in our work, please share this with family members, friends, colleagues and perfect strangers! Spread the word however you can.
