The idea of making a quick mounting robot kit with unlimited possibilities has been in our minds since our university days some 7 years ago. The robot kits that were available in the market during that time had fixed outlooks and functions. If it was a puppy pet robot set, then it would just be a puppy robot. If it was a mobile robot, then that was all it could be. Therefore, when you got bored with the mobile robot features, you could not modify it to your own specifications. Children tend to lose interest after playing with it for a short period of time.
Through the years, the market reacted to this problem and henceforth we could see robot kits such as Bioloid, Robobuilder and Vex Robotics sprouting in the market. However, they still used the screw and nut method to construct their robots. This posed a choking hazard to children plus the construction process was too laborious. Thus, it struck us that if we were to bring robot-making to the masses, we would have to make the robot assembling and dismantling process quicker and simpler. Furthermore, the robots would have to be reconfigurable into various physical shapes in order to sustain interest. Four years ago, we started working on a solution by developing a robot construction kit to meet these requirements. Today, we proudly present to you our brainchild – a Reconfigurable Robot, which we have affectionately named rero.
Easy to Reconfigure
Eliminating the tiny screws and nuts is our main objective in making reconfigurable robots a reality. rero accomplished this with the straightforward sliding method between its connectors and joints.
We do not even need to fasten a single screw in the entire construction process. This will make the assembling and dismantling of a robot really easy and fast.
No Rules in Joining Parts
Building robots can only be real fun and train your imagination if you do not have to follow the step-by-step instruction manual. The world's first robotic servo in cubical shape with 5 slidable slots helps eliminate the obstructions in robot building. rero provides maximum freedom to users to do any combination they want by joining one part to another.
Touch Panel Makes Things Different
For the first time ever you see a robot kit which incorporates a 3.2" color touch screen. This makes rero stand out from other robots in the market. Touch screen allows easier access whereby you do not need to press multiple buttons to play a function. In addition, you can even insert your very own screen wallpaper to make your robot more personalized.
Program Your Robot with the Touch of Your Fingertips
rero comes with a ‘Teach Mode’ that can be accessed through the touch panel. You can program a simple movement to your robot without powering up your laptop. This is a very useful and powerful tool especially for those who want to avoid the hassle of computer programming.
rero Animator. A Stepping Stone for Novices
Unlike other robot kits, rero does not require a powerful programming language with hundreds of syntaxes. For beginners, they only need the simplest programming tool to help them to program their robots and at the same time facilitate their logical thinking. The custom designed rero Animator does this job perfectly. And it's FREE for download!
*rero Animator only supports windows at this phase. We don't have rero Animator for Mac OS and Linux for the initial release. It is on our roadmap though, and hopefully we can have something out around the end of Q1 2015. For the time being, Mac users can use virtual machine to run the Windows version of rero Animator.
rero is Bluetooth Enabled
You can download rero Remote app to your smart phone (android and iOS) and use it as your remote controller to control rero via Bluetooth. Each button on the app can be customized by assigning a different set of motions to it. Robot fighting can be carried out among your friends with this feature. This Bluetooth enabled feature also means that you can do whatever you want with rero wirelessly.

Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU)
rero Controller comes with a 6 DOF IMU. It can be used for orientation, vibration, fall detection, balancing and many other applications. Basically your robot knows when he is in space :)
We have created a two wheels balancing robot out of fun by making use of this IMU sensor. IMU reading is not supported by rero Animator for the time being. Only advanced users can manipulate it with the provided API.
API for Developer
We will provide API for developers to hack or write their own C codes for rero. We encourage advanced users to unleash the full potential of rero by doing so.
Print Your Own rero Parts!
To bring robot-making to the next level, we even provide 3D CAD drawing for all rero parts. You can modify the existing rero parts or create a new part that you find is interesting and useful for rero and print it using a 3D printer! Here is a simple walking robot made by a lucky boy, Sudatta Hor (11 years old) from Rolla, MO, USA. He used 'teach mode' for this walking gait. He will improve the gait with rero Animator soon.

For The Arduino Community
We already have G15 shield for Arduino in our store. It can be used to control the cube servos. We purposely prepare two perks for Arduino users who wish to build simple robots with cube servos. $69 for one G15 shield, two cube servos, two slim wheels and one ball castor to build a mobile robot. $99 for one G15 shield, three cube servos and three U joints to build a 3 DOF arm robot. The G15 shield also comes with ports for Dynamixel servo.
rero starts from a standard set that contains everything you need to build a simple robot with only 8 pcs of Cube Servo and 1 sensor. If you are looking for a more complicated robots with more than 8 DOF (degree of freedom), you can consider the Basic Bundle that combines rero Standard Set and rero Servo Expansion Pack. That will make up a total number of 14 Cube Servos and 1 sensor for your robot!

We have 34 molds which are ready for production in our injection molder factory. We will start fabricating another 9 molds as soon as we achieve our basic goal of $45,000. It will take about 4 months to get these 9 molds working. Injecting the parts will only take 1 to 2 weeks.
At the same time we will start ordering the electronic components and send our controller for lab tests. We fabricate the controller in-house so it wouldn't be a problem for us to improve the circuit based on feedback from the tests.
Our software team will also be working on improving the user experience for rero Animator, rero Remote and rero Controller's interface.
We estimate we can get all parts and components ready for in-house assembly, testing and packing by late April. We plan to ship out the first batch of rero by early June.
Risks and Challenges
Our amazing team will try their best to deliver the product on time. However, we are aware of factors that we cannot control from current development process to mass production and finally reaching your hands.
First of all we need to go through various tests required before we can ship rero to your doorsteps. We will need to put our electronic components and hardware parts through the lab tests to get the required certificates. Since this is the first time for us to do the tests, this may add uncertainty to the delivery date.
Besides, there are always unpredictable issues occurred during the mold making process. This could add a variable to lengthen the time to delivery as well.
However we promise to keep you all in the loop so you know how we are making progress.
Who Are We?
rero is designed and built in Malaysia by Cytron Technologies. Cytron was formed by 5 undergraduates in the university lab 8 years ago. Together, we started the company by developing various kinds of microcontroller development boards to assist university students in completing their robotic projects.
After years of uphill struggle, Cytron currently has 19 employees including 7 design engineers. We have developed over 100 products for universities, robotic labs as well as automation industry. All our current products are designed for advanced users.
Over the years, however, we have had school teachers and parents telling us how keen their kids are to take up robotics and inquiring whether we have something for them to start with. That's why we created rero.
Our ultimate aim is to bring down the learning curve so that even the young or non-technical person can have fun with robots and at the same time learn some new skills.
