Reinas de Los Ángeles
Engage in the world of performances, wardrobes, dancing, and singing as only these women can deliver.
Reinas de Los Ángeles explores the lives of Latina immigrant women who produce, host, and perform shows throughout LA.
This film will serve as a tool to narrate some of the oral hystories of the Spanish-speaking "drag" scene of LA. The stories captured explore the social, political, and artistic worlds of a community that has been thriving for the last 20 years. Your support of this film will fund the creation of a space and medium to narrate, document, and dialogue with the queens of the LA night scene.
Byron Jose is a performance artist, writer, educator, and filmmaker in LA. As an immigrant in Los Angeles, he engages in various endeavors to deconstruct norms, vices, and discourses. Through his work, he presents byproducts struggling to be free. He uses video projections, his body, and ordinary occurrences, to create artistic pieces that combat monotonous expectations of art, while challenging constructs around process and form.
Artist Statement and Funding
The production and development of this film is aligned with the filmmaker's political and artistic vision regarding access, resources, and capital. The $6000 goal for this crowd-sourcing campaign takes will fund interviewee stipends, a stipend for Director of Photography, equipment, food, materials, and transportation. The budgeted goal is a realistic figure that seeks to spend the least amount possible while ensuring that individuals involved in this project are compensated for their time, and receive a small honorarium.
Inspired by the women interviewed in this film, who practice a model of self-determined work with respect, dignity and fair compensation, revenues generated from this fundraiser that exceed the target goal will be re-distributed to cast and crew members.
