Reclamation Brewing Company is located at 221 South Main Street in Butler, Pennsylvania - 33 miles from the heart of Pittsburgh. We're three guys who are currently working towards getting our business open and hope you will join us in our efforts!
We have plenty of things we'd like to talk about (and we will a little further down the page) but we figure these are some things you're probably wondering right off the bat.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Where are you located?
A: Our building is located at 221 S. Main Street in Butler, PA.
Q: Are you guys in the old Hot Dog Shop building?
A: Nope. There is a brewery in planning there as well, but that's our friends, Butler Brew Works. We're up the street toward the courthouse in the old Unicorn Gift Shop location.
Q: When will you be open?
A: The short answer is "We'll be open as soon as we can." The longer answer is that we anticipate, upon successful completion of this campaign, opening up this fall. A lot of things in this business, and many businesses, depend on the cooperation and responsiveness of various slow-moving government agencies and.... well, we'll leave it at that.
Q: Will you sell growlers, pints, bottles, or distribute?
Q: What kind of beers will you have?
A: We'll have quite the variety. We have 5 beers that will be on tap year-round. We'll also have monthly beers, seasonal beers, and small batch beers which will be very limited in availability. There's a pretty good chance we'll have something you will like.
Q: I like Bud Light. Do you have anything that tastes like Bud Light?
A: No. And we never will.
Q: Will I be able to find you on draft at my local pub/restaurant/distributor?
A: It depends on where you live. We already have numerous restaurants, pubs and distributors in and around the Pittsburgh region interested in carrying our product and we anticipate quite a few more. We'll publish a full list and keep it updated.
Q: I heard one of you is a pastor. Seriously?
A: Yep. John is a pastor and Ben & Ben are actively involved in the church as well. Jesus made and drank wine. We're pretty sure He wouldn't have a problem with moderate beer consumption, in fact, just the opposite.
Q: Did you guys have a fundraiser before?
A: Yes. For some reason we decided that it would be a great idea to run an all-or-nothing Kickstarter campaign about a month after we started our business and no one knew who we were. We raised about half of what we were asking for ($35k at the time) so the money never left anyone's account. We regrouped, signed a lease on a building, bought a bunch of equipment, gathered a few small investors, and have kept progress moving since then.
Q: Who made your video?
Q: What does the Mug Club include?
A: Great question. "You're now part of the Reclamation Brewing Company Mug Club! Mug Club members get their name on a special "Mug Club Wall" and their own mug to use any time they come to the brewery. These mugs are made by local artist Renee Suhr at Stray Cat Studios in Beaver Falls, PA. In addition, Mug Club members get a membership card (we all know you want to show your friends), periodic special offers, occasional free growler fills, discounts and all sorts of other stuff."
Q: I have another question that isn't listed here...
Now on to some other stuff...
Since starting our company, we've had one big goal... make ridiculously delicious beers for our community. We've done tastings, perfected our recipes, served our beer at weddings, completed the required legal work to start a business, and know that we have the brewing & business skills in order to succeed. So that we are able to allow more of you try more of our beers, we need some help expanding our operations and opening a tap room and brew pub.
We are well on our way to having the necessary funds to get RBC open for business, but there are still a few things we need. If you're considering giving us your hard-earned money, you probably want to know what we'll do with it, right?
- We've already bought much of our equipment for brewing and serving, but there are still a few odds and ends we need before we can open. The largest portion of this money will go towards those items.
- We're doing most of the construction ourselves, but materials aren't free! We need a few more supplies to put up a couple walls and fixtures.
- Part of the funds (but not much) from this campaign will go to pay indiegogo for their services, as well as to help pay for the rewards for all of our contributors.
Reclamation Brewing Company is more than just another bar where you can go to have a drink. We've set out to help change the entire beer culture. Here are a few things we're thinking about with this endeavor...
Frequently, the beer culture gets a bad name. We’re striving to educate people about beer and its history. We want to help elevate the beer culture above the idea that beer drinking is only at home in some seedy subculture. We’re striving to see people informed about the delight and deliciousness of carefully crafted beers. We want to expose their palates (physical and intellectual) to a more tasteful beer experience.
In days gone by, the pub was a place for the community to gather, make connections, share ideas and perspectives, discuss the world, and to have a great time together. Our vision for the brewpub is that it will be a place where people can experience community, enjoy conversation, and discuss life and all things beer.
We also want to invest in our community by using local merchants, craftsmen, suppliers, and business partners whenever possible. Even the rewards for your help with this project, our graphics and video work, and other things necessary for this campaign have been sourced locally to the best of our abilities. Also, at least 10% of all profits (and more than that when at all possible) generated by Reclamation Brewing Company will be donated to local charity.
Yep! A theology of beer! The fact that you might be shocked we included this category is proof that we should include it. The founders of Reclamation Brewing Company all happen to be followers of Jesus Christ and also happen to be brewers of quality beers. This may seem to be a contradiction in some people’s minds. But in reality, it’s not. We believe that beer is among the many good gifts with which God has blessed mankind. Of course, you don’t have to believe what we believe to enjoy a good beer. We're happy to hang out and talk no matter what your background may be.
Not only do we at Reclamation Brewing Company enjoy drinking a finely crafted beer, we also enjoy creating them. Our desire is to continue and expand the tradition of innovation for which craft brewers are known. From our high gravity Promised Land Ale to our Egan’s Irish Stout, to our Carey Me Home Double IPA and beyond, we strive to be innovators of new styles as well as new twists on old ones which challenge the way people think about and enjoy good beer.
Are you tired of asking for a beer only to hear that all the restaurant is serving is garbage? Corporate, formulaic beer has been the norm (thank God that's changing) and we know we can do better than that. People want more than just a buzz from their beer. They want flavor! We're seeking to reclaim beer drinking from the idea that it has to be a bland, boring, tasteless experience. We’re committed to the idea that beer should be good and a pleasure to drink! At Reclamation Brewing Company, we’re committed to using the finest, local, quality ingredients and the most meticulous processes to produce the tastiest and finest quality beers on the market.
Reclamation Brewery Company is owned by John and Ben Smith (father and son) and longtime friend, Ben Duncan.
- John Smith was born and grew up in southwestern Ohio where he owned and operated a packaging business before moving with his family to Jacksonville, Florida for Theological training. John moved to western PA with his wife, Robbi, and his two children, Ben and Ashley in 1997 where he served as pastor of a local church for 15 years. John currently pastors Restoration Church in Butler, PA
- Ben Duncan has loved beer for a long time. He attended high school in Dayton, PA and began working thereafter. He's worked in several different areas, most recently in quality control and estimating. He's an avid traveler, beer recipe master and he may even play you a tune on the guitar if you ask really nicely!
- Ben (Dennis) Smith has always had a bit of a flare for business and entrepreneurship. After high school Ben attended and graduated from The Pennsylvania State University where he studied Business Administration and Marketing. He currently lives in Western Pennsylvania with his wife, Emily, and their son, Egan, where he works a day job while pursuing his Master's degree in Higher Education.
We began our drink production together by making wine but quickly changed our focus to beer making as we enjoyed the greater control of the process as well as the shorter time from brew to bottle to consumption. We hope to share with you what we have learned as you enjoy one of our tasty brews.
All of our incentives are listed on the side of this page of course, but here are pictures of a few just in case you can't envision them. There are obviously more that you can see over on the right side of the screen. However, some are kind of hard to provide images of... like the stool, table, dinners, etc.
^LIMITED EDITION T-SHIRT^
*Please note that all of the non-tangible rewards are able to be delivered only when we open the brewpub.
*All "estimated delivery on" dates are exactly that - estimated. They are based on the assumption that we reach our goal in this campaign.
