On October 10th, C.H Ruby and her fisherfolk family were evicted from their home in Ganjam district of Odisha, India. They were removed by Government forces and shifted to an ill-equipped relief shelter in order to save their lives from the advancing cyclone that was to hit them very soon. Two nights after the cyclone passed, she made her way back to the village only to discover that her house and her belongings were swept away by the merciless gusts of the cyclone, lost forever. Ruby had survived the cyclone, now the challenge was to survive the aftermath.
One can only imagine the mental anguish of experiencing your life's savings disappear in a momentary fury of climate change. To not have a roof over your head, to lose your only source of income, and to be driven to scrounge for survival, it's doesn't feel fair what's happening to them. Rebuilding the lives of Ruby, her family, and thousands of survivors like her is an uphill yet urgent task.
Phailin relief is a campaign that is being run by 350.org and Council of Social Action (CoSA, www.cosaindia.org) 350.org is a global climate campaigns organisation that is building a grassroots movement to tackle the climate crisis. 350.org's local partner Council of Social Action works on various livelihood and empowerment programs in the villages of Odisha.

a. Raising money and resources for restoring peoples livelihoods in Odisha
b. Helping connect the dots between Phailin and Climate Change
c. Demanding climate adaptation in affected areas of Odisha
The second and third objectives will be worked on by 350.org and CoSA respectively. 350.org has been working on public mobilisation around climate change and helping people connect the dots between extreme weather disasters like Phailin, Haiyan, Uttarakhand floods etc and climate change. Making these connections is important to move our leaders to realise the urgency of global warming and drastically reduce our carbon emissions.
CoSA and its convenor Santosh Pattnaik will be working with the local administration of the district and impress upon them the need for enhanced climate adaptation for such disasters in the future.
