"By The Snake"
Repertory Dance Theatre, founded in 1966, is dedicated to the creation, performance, and appreciation of modern dance. For 48 years RDT has preserved the masterpieces of the past and commissioned new works that look toward the future.
Beginning July 1 RDT goes Gaga as we start work on a brand new commission "By The Snake" by Noa Zuk and Ohad Fishof. These two artists have trained and grown up with Gaga, a revolutionary new movement language invented by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin. Gaga is taking the world by storm. Totally contemporary and "NOW," Gaga offers us a snapshot of what is going on globally in the contemporary art world.
Ever wonder how a dance is created? Do you crave cutting-edge art? Art that connects you to the ideas of the world's great artists? Then this is a project you'll love. Through updates, rehearsal videos, and artists' insights, you will get a "behind-the-scenes" look at how a dance work is created from beginning to end. You'll get to be a part of the process and help make this happen.
What We Need & What You Get
While the full project budget for "By The Snake" is close to $100,000 we are using the Indiegogo platform to raise $7500 to cover the choreographic and artistic fees associated with this new commission. Other grants have been written and diverse funding sources are being explored to help bring the full project to fruition, including a grant from the John & Marcia Price Family Foundation. Music for the work is commissioned by the Charles & Joan Gross Family Foundation.
Whatever amount we raise, we will put toward the choreographic and artistic fees. Your donation and support will make a HUGE difference as we work to bring the best of international contemporary dance to Utah.
We are excited to offer a range of perks and rewards for supporting this project. Whether it's tickets to the world premiere, a personal voice message recorded on your phone by our very own radio personality Ricklen Nobis, or a framed vintage poster, we have tried to offer you something unique and significant--something that truly thanks you for your support at any level.
Why support RDT and "By The Snake?"
...because you know just how compelling contemporary dance and art can tell our human story.
... because you love RDT and know the important role we play in the community. As America's premiere modern dance repertory company, RDT has a collection of over 350 works that spans 100 years of dance. "By The Snake" represents a snapshot of current dance aesthetics. By supporting this project, you help RDT curate this moment for future generations. And no other dance company in the world can build a bridge to the past, present, and future in the same fashion as we can.
...because you know that Utah isn't really the stodgy place some people think it is. You know how sophisticated and cutting edge our Utah arts landscape is becoming. You care about
art and you know that it lies at the center of a vibrant community. And others are taking notice–Salt Lake City was just named the Most Creative Mid-sized city by Movoto Real Estate.
...because you are curious about the artistic process and want to see, first-hand, how a contemporary dance is created. Follow along here on Indiegogo, on the RDT Dancers' Blog (www.rdtutah.org/blog) and via social media outlets to watch the genesis of this new work.
Risks & Challenges
From choreographer Noa Zuk: "By The Snake promises to deconstruct roles and routines of traditional couples dancing that reflect a different social order..."
What the...? What does that mean? We don't really know... That's the risk, challenge AND beauty of this project. We are offering you a personalized view as we discover--with Noa and Ohad--exactly what this new work is going to look like. What it means. It's a chance to be present with the artist as this work is created, explored, investigated, and developed.
