About Rachel

Rachel Selekman is an artist who makes sculpture and works on paper, and she’s been doing it, well, all her life, but you could say professionally since she received her BFA in 1985. A pretty long time no matter how you slice it. Trust me, I know, as I’m her.

On August 8, 2013, I’ll be turning the big “5” “0” and it’s time to survey my artistic career thus far and put it in print. That means publish my first monograph, a survey catalogue that will show the development of my sculpture and works on paper from the late 1980s to the present.

About the Catalogue

The catalogue, called “Rachel Selekman: Making Connections,” with a print run of 1,000, will be filled with more than forty images of my sculpture and works on paper, so you’ll really get to see how my work has evolved over the years. It will include two essays, which will provide insight into why I do what I do, including my inspiration, interest in everyday objects, personal iconography, working method, and relationship to other artists and art movements, both past and present. It’ll be a good read!

One essay will be written by Margaret Mathews-Berenson, who is also organizing a traveling exhibition of my work, and I’m working on securing the second writer now. Of course, it will also include my biography. And it could very well include your name on the acknowledgment page (see the 5th perk). The catalogue will be published by the end of 2013.

Why a Catalogue?

Because it will be an amazingly helpful tool as well as a lasting document, showing my artistic accomplishments during the first half of my career.

Yes, it’s true that I’ve had numerous solo shows, that my works been included in even more group exhibitions all over the world, and that it’s in many private and public collections, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, but there’s still much more to accomplish, lots of people in the ever-expanding art world who have never seen what I make, and, fundamentally, art is to be out in the world and this catalogue will help me get it out there—with your support!

It will also be a great complement to my website. The book will get folks intrigued and then they can go to my website to see even more work, read lots of reviews, my artist statement, and see the very latest work. It will also be a valuable accompaniment to my traveling show, which Margaret Mathews-Berenson is organizing as I mentioned above.

This Campaign

I’ve given this campaign a lot of thought. And in thinking about it and planning it, it dawned on me that it’s really another expression, or form, of my art. My work has always been a means of communication, a way to connect. For instance, many of the sculptures reach out to the viewer, drawing you in and enveloping you. The everyday objects I use (purses and watering cans) are familiar and make the work approachable, and often humorous, as these objects are absurd in their new manifestations. The works on paper entice with their compositions, materials, and intricate process. The point is, I want the viewer to have a personal, unique experience/connection with my art, and I also want to connect with you through this campaign, because you’re my friends, family, peers, colleagues, and fellow artists, or you’re supporting me because someone we know in common thought you’d be interested in this project. So thanks for taking this ride with me, and for your love and support.

Your Impact

Is huge! Your contirbutions are going to help me, a devoted, hardworking artist, by impacting the development of my work and my career in a tangible way. And by doing so, you more broadly acknowledge that art matters and is an integral and critical part of our society.

As for the particulars, your donations will pay for all the costs to produce the catalogue: the graphic designer, two writers, printing (which alone is about $10,000), an editor, postage and envelopes, and photography. (Photography too is a significant expense, but it’s critical. The images have to top-notch, and photography has changed so much. Remember film? Remember the first digital cameras? Well, I’ll have to have some of my older work reshot and slides and 4 x 5 transparencies professionally scanned, plus there’s new work to be photographed as well.)

Oh, yeah, and you’ll be giving me the best 50th birthday present ever!

Are You Turning Fifty This Year?
