We Did It!!

We surpassed our goal of $18,000 and because of your support, we will be able to expand to at least three more public school sites in the Bay Area this year!!

We are so deeply grateful and amazed by the outpouring of support we received to help us bring the transformative practices of yoga to under-resourced students.  You have proven that if we come together as a community, we can create positive change for the next generation.

Please stay in touch with us and we would love to update you on how your generosity has impacted the lives of youth.

With love and gratitude,

Erin Lila Wilson and the RISE team

Who We Are

We bring yoga and wellness education to public high school students in San Francisco and we invite you to be part of our project!

In January of 2012, we launched a small pilot program at Mission High School in San Francisco, CA that brought yoga and wellness workshops to students during their P.E. period.  They loved it. Students from all walks of life told us they felt more relaxed through out the day, they slept better, improved their diets, paid more attention in class, and their relationships with friends and family improved.

The positive feedback we received from students and teachers alike reinforced our belief that inner transformation is the first step to creating change in our world.

This fall, we are launching RISE Yoga for Youth.  RISE brings yoga to schools and youth organizations across the Bay Area, where budgets for physical education, and health and wellness are often non-existent.

Your funds will help cover the expenses of running our program, which include paying certified yoga teachers to provide instruction, mats and other supplies, program evaluation, and program development.

About the Founder and Director

Erin Lila Wilson, E-RYT 500, began teaching yoga in 2005 after completing yoga teacher training with Integral Yoga.  She taught yoga to underserved teens at an alternative high school in New York City for six years, and developed a curriculum that fulfills credits for Physical Education and Health.  Witnessing the profound transformation students experienced as a result of practicing yoga motivated her to do more work with youth, and she began teaching yoga to youth in other schools, incarceration facilities, and community centers.  She also developed a teacher training program that trains yoga teachers, school teachers, and other youth workers to teach yoga practices and principles to teens in the school setting.  She facilitates the trainings nationally and internationally.

In January of 2012, she moved to San Francisco to pilot a yoga in schools program.  With its successful launch, she is excited to bring the program to more schools throughout the Bay Area.  Her dream is to make a better world by bringing yoga to as many youth as possible.

Why Our Program?  Why Donate?

Youth are more stressed today than ever, which affects their physical, mental, and emotional health, the safety of their school environments, and their academic success.

  • Obesity has more than tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years, due to poor diets, stress, and sedentary lifestyles.
  • School violence is widespread, particularly in inner-city schools. Violence and bullying reduces the ability to learn and affects students’ physical, mental, and emotional health.
  • Over 10 million students in America are on anti-depressants.
  • The achievement gap facing underserved minority groups is significant, and constitutes one of the greatest social injustices in education today.

RISE works to help students alleviate stress, find alternatives to violence, and develop compassion for themselves and for others.

We offer students a comprehensive education in hatha yoga, which includes instruction in physical postures, mindfulness, and breathing practices.  Students benefit from engaging in physical activity in the middle of their academic day, and also learn relaxation techniques to manage stress.

RISE classes also incorporate a series of life skills workshops on topics that include:

  • Non-violence
  • Nutrition
  • Drugs
  • Conflict resolution
  • Self-esteem
  • Anger management
  • Stress management
  • Healthy relationships

Our goal is to foster socio-emotional learning and empower students to respond to life's challenges in constructive ways.

It's Working!

Of the students who participated in our programming last year,

  • 84% say they feel less stressed
  • 93% say they know how to use their breath to calm down when angry or upset
  • 71% say they have improved their diets
  • 73% say they sleep better
  • 80% say they feel happier
  • 82% say they have improved relationships with their friends and family
  • 72% say they feel less anxious
  • 80% feel more energized
  • 74% say they focus better in academic classes
  • 85% say they feel more positive about their future

Students say...

"Now I stay cool.  Yoga helped me improve my grades."

"I used to be an angry person.  Yoga helped me become a better person."

Our Campaign Goal

Because of budget cuts in the public schools, most schools cannot pay for our programming.  This is where you come in!

We have surpassed our goal to raise $18,000 to bring our yoga program to three public schools in the Bay Area that serve low-income youth!!

Please help us now reach our stretch goal of $24,000 so we can bring our program to an additional school site!

Our current school sites include:

  • Mission High School in the Mission
  • Ida B. Wells High School in the Western Addition
  • Edgewood Heritage Academy in the Sunset
  • Alfa (girls foster) Homes in the Haight-Ashbury
  • Capuchino High School in San Mateo

Where Is The Money Going?

With your donation you are helping transform the lives and hearts of youth so they can be empowered to be agents of change in the world.

Any donation, great or small, will make a difference in the lives of our youth!

We are in the process of becoming an independent nonprofit.  In the meantime, we are operating as a project under the fiscal sponsorship of SEE (Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs).  Your donations are tax deductible and upon donation you will receive a receipt from SEE that may be used for tax purposes.
