There are many, but here's just a few:
After hits like The Hunger Games and Twilight, publishers scramble to produce more of the same and a slew of mostly mediocre novels follow because the industry is busy chasing trends instead of taking chances and creating the next big thing.
Well-known, popular authors receive huge marketing budgets while debut authors that actually need those budgets receive little support and must hustle to market their own book alone.
There's a pervasive myth in the industry that diverse children's and YA books don't sell. (Strange when you look at the population numbers.) How will the types of books available to young people ever broaden if literary agents don't search out those clients; or publishers don't acquire and fully promote more books by and featuring people of color; or booksellers don't carry diverse books in their stores because they don't think their clientele will "relate" to the stories?
Quill Shift Literary Agency creates an environment that finds and promotes great authors, invites readers to participate, and intrigues publishing houses to purchase those authors' works by:
Asking readers (and listening to) what they really want to read
Finding and representing authors (children's and YA) whose work aligns with readers' interests
Giving readers the power to choose what is published by allowing them to choose who Quill Shift Literary Agency represents
Offering authors a multipronged marketing approach before and after publication, adding to what publishing houses will provide
Providing research to publishing houses on market needs to prompt sales
Just like viewers tune in to the American Idol and call in for their favorites, after reading 10% of an author's manuscript, Shifters can donate money to read more of the never-before-seen book, "casting their vote", so to speak.
Once the author has enough monetary votes, they are ready for their deal...with a publishing house instead of a record label. The people are behind them. The author now has a fan base they didn't have before and because those fans were part of the process of making the book, they'll encourage others to purchase what they had a hand in producing.
Literary agents work within companies whose core mission is advocating and supporting writers and their literary dreams by finding them the right editor, negotiating the right deal, and giving them the right advice for their writing career. Almost no publishing house will accept a book proposal from an unagented writer, so agents are a crucial ingredient in the book creation process.
Sounds kind of like Simon Cowell's job, right? He found Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Quill Shift Literary Agency will find the next author of a book people can get behind like Harry Potter or The Hunger Games.
The funds raised will go towards attracting the very best in the writing community to submit their work, specifically talented authors writing diverse characters into their stories, and supporting marketing plans unique to Quill Shift Literary Agency that will ensure that these writers have the community they need to succeed, whether the author goes the traditional or self-publishing route.
Examples of how donations will be utilized include:
Creation of online community for readers to connect and support Quill Shift Literary Agency author works
Updating and/or creating the chosen authors' personal websites
Cover design for each chosen manuscript to be uploaded on the Quill Shift Literary Agency Website
Professional ePub formatting for each chosen manuscript
Social media marketing and outreach
The knowledge that you are supporting a business that wants to find and nurture talent to bring diverse, well-written stories to children
Gorgeous coffee (or tea...or wine) mugs
Beautiful (and sturdy) tote bags
Soft and fitted t-shirts

7 and 3 are magical numbers in children's books. Please share this campaign with 7 people, and then urge them to share it with 3 more! Like the popularity of a great book, it doesn't happen just because the book is amazing. It happens because people spread the word and encourage others to take part in the experience.
Keep reading and sharing the stories you love with others, especially the young ones.
