THE PROBLEM

Life Without Power

Known locally as "Slum Island" and crammed from end to end with shanty structures, Remba Island is a treeless strip of land on the Kenya-Uganda border of Lake Victoria.

Remba’s isolation means power, clean water and health services are poorly developed, scarcely distributed and extremely expensive. As a result, disease prevalence is high and daily activities are a great challenge.

Remba supports a population of 5,000+ fishermen who sail in search of the large fish catches no longer available nearer the mainland. Locals say the island can only support its population because inhabitants fish (and sleep) in shifts.

THE SOLUTION

Mobile Enabled Micro Grid

access:energy’s micro grid will convert the abundant sun and wind on the island into life-changing electricity to power lights, refrigerators, mobile phones and other appliances.

The installation will be remotely controlled and monitored through cloud software and smart meters developed by access:energy. No cash changes hands - connected

customers use their mobile phones to top up pre-paid units of energy on individual lines.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?

The more we raise, the more we build!

  • $10,000

    • 1 x 3.5kW energy hub = 50 x homes connected

  • $20,000

    • 2 x 3.5kW energy hubs = 100 x homes connected

  • $30,000 (target)

    • 2 x 3.5kW energy hubs = 100 x homes connected

    • 1 x ice making plant =  ice for chilling fish

  • $50,000

    • 2 x 7kW energy hubs = 400 x homes with power

    • 1 x ice making plant = ice for chilling fish

OUR PARTNERS

One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the technology which enables us to bring a mobile energy payment system to one of the most remote corners of Kenya. We are partnering with companies such as Africa's Talking, a mobile communications specialist based in Kenya, to make this possible.
