What We're Doing.

We are Basic Training, a San Francisco-based outdoor fitness company, and we are installing an outdoor workout space for public use in Hayes Valley. The free, pop-up  fitness hub will transform a previously unused parking lot within Hayes Valley's PROXY project into a bright, colorful, beautifully designed multi-use space (see below!)

Everyone knows we spend too much time tied to our desks and computers, but breaking these habits can be tough. The Basic Training fitness hub is an innovative answer to the problems city dwellers face when there are few, if any, open-air fitness options outside their door or office. This "hub" will be a place where people can mix things up on their way to and from work by jumping, climbing, swinging, running, pushing, playing, or simply pondering the possibilities of free, unfettered, activity for all -- 24 hours a day.

As California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom put it, "This communal facility provides a blueprint for a healthy, livable, and vibrant community."

Why Us.

Basic Training has been leading people on adventures across San Francisco’s varied natural terrain and breathtaking landmarks for five years. No one knows her curves and contours as well as we do. But there are places in the city where access to this terrain is not immediate, and there are times (like on a lunch break from work or on your way home) when you don't have time to get to the Presidio or the Lyon Street stairs. The Pop-Up Fitness Hub at PROXY is our solution to this problem. We'll be the first to admit we've got a little crush on this city. Whether catching the sun rise at Land's End, running sand dunes at Ocean Beach, doing pull-ups along the Embarcadero, or backwards bear crawls all the way up to Coit Tower, we've been going on dates with San Francisco every day for five years. Rain or shine, with our without the company of Karl tour inspiration, our dream girl, if you will. In this video, photographer Eva Kolenko follows founder Jenn Pattee as she travels through San Francisco in a classic Basic Training way, on an epic run to work. It's our tribute to the places and people who make our job so rewarding, a testament to why we love what we do, our love letter to San Francisco. (Special thanks to Geographer for providing their song "Kites.")

What it will look like.

The Basic Training Pop-Up Fitness Hub will include a workout wall, jumping station, and open space. Together, these elements offer the ingredients for a vast array of classes and infinite combinations of movements for circuit training. It’s the ultimate adult playground for adventure race training, working out solo on your way to or from work, or just having a good time with your friends on the weekends.

We need this.

By creating a prototype for a mobile playground that could be replicated and installed throughout San Francisco and beyond, the workout hub's forward-looking design re-imagines what is possible for a parking lot, our health, and the future of urban planning.

"I am proud to support the efforts of Basic Training on their plans to install an outdoor workout space for public use in Hayes Valley. This communal facility provides a blueprint for a healthy, livable, and vibrant community."

- Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom

Spearheaded by California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom during his tenure as mayor of San Francisco, PROXY has become a revolutionary experiment in urban renewal and interim use.

Before the Central Freeway was demolished as a result of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, Hayes Valley was lacking any kind of town square or green space. The removal of the freeway provided a unique opportunity to think creatively about the neighborhood. We are now witnessing a vital and vibrant Hayes Valley, and a central piece of this success story is PROXY, currently being developed by Envelope A+D, which won the competitive bid to bring inventive, cutting-edge architectural designs to a set of unused lots at the corner of Hayes and Octavia.

The workout hub will offer exercise opportunities to a greater population than has had access to it before, addressing public health in an innovative way, and playing a role in PROXY’s larger goal of bringing "culture, commerce, and play" to Hayes Valley."

People are using cities in ways urban planners never imagined -- and that's a good thing. We want to make it even easier, and safer, for people to take their workouts outside gyms and into public spaces beautifully designed and specifically built for this purpose,” says Basic Training founder Jennifer Pattee. “Our goal is to make the corner of Hayes and Octavia a bright spot in the neighborhood, and in the bigger story of public health in America today."

Where your money is going.

If we reach our stretch goals, we'll add a filtered water station and outdoor movie screen for community events, guest speakers, and movie nights.
