Update 10/5/2014:

Thanks so much for all your support so far! With your generous contributions, our basic expenses (rent, insurance, and utilities) are paid for half of 2015!

As we enter the last three days of the campaign, we wanted to add a stretch goal: we would love to bring the total up to $15,000. It would be great if you could help us share this campaign to friends who might be interested in supporting a people-of-color led hacker and maker space (something rare in the U.S.; as far as we know, we are still the only one).

This money would help us pay for more of 2015. Or, if feasible, we would use it for space improvements. Our top three wish list items are an electronic lock for the space so we can give out more keys to more people; a childcare corner so even the youngest of the little ones will have a safe and clean space to play in; and a new floor (we have a wood floor that was painted over years before we moved in).

Thank you again for all of your help!

We are starting to get busy on fulfilling perks, and you should be hearing from us soon.

Update: Yay! We've passed $5,000!

Thanks so much for helping us make our initial goal of $5,000! This will help us keep the space open for the next 6 months! Of course, we want to improve our facilities and continue being a donation-based space that's accessible to everyone in our communities. If you could help us by spreading the word, that would be great! Sharing and liking the LOL Facebook page would be super helpful, as well a personal appeal to your friends and networks to support our campaign.

Also, we've added new perks, including Born Fine Lip Gloss, lessons on making sourdough bread from Julio and Diana, Spiritual Massage Energy Work from Shooting Star Botanicals, and custom magnets by Joanne!

The importance of diversity in maker and hacker culture

Liberating Ourselves Locally is one of the few (if not only) people of color-led makerspaces/hackerspaces in the Bay Area. If you do a search for "people of color makerspace" on Google, we're not just the first result, we fill the first page.

We're not just for people of color — when we started the space in 2011, we wanted to create a place that was welcoming and comfortable space for many folks not part of the hacker culture, including immigrants, women, queer and trans folks, and poor people.

To appeal to a wider audience, we've had a diverse range of events at our space, including: Hack Night (every Monday), BAAITS craft night (every Tuesday), herbalism workshops, SELC's Resilient Communities Legal Café, carpentry workshops, meditation pillow making, how to survive the zombie apocalypse, and, of course, Make Everything Day (our alternative to Black Friday).

Immediate needs: next 6 months

We lost one of our main funding sources recently, so we're appealing to our community to keep the space running.

We've set our goal at $5,000, which will keep us open for another 4-6 months (hopefully longer, since we still get income from events, workshops, and sessions).

The rest of 2015 and beyond

That said, the more we raise, the better we can plan for the future and continue providing an important resource to our communities. If we can raise more than $5,000, funds will be used for basics through the rest of 2015. Next on the list of priorities is to get some of the amenities common at other spaces, including accessibility upgrades for our washroom, electronic locking system, better Internet, electrical upgrades, a real kitchen (more cooking classes!), and, of course, tools and equipment that folks can use for hacking and making!
