Pencil Productions:

Pencil Productions is a new collaborative organization designed to serve as a springboard for young thespians of all ilks. Especially at its genesis our group will focus on creating entirely new works with an emphasis on writing and editing. We want to explore various methodologies and choices in acting, directing, and design as well as in the development of scripts.

The pieces we put on are clearly works in progress: short plays and staged readings that could be the beginnings of a longer works, films, or full length plays. Our workplace will be as much a laboratory as a theatre, a setting for us to try out new ideas, new styles, new forms.

Ultimately, Pencil Productions exists to help counteract an American theatre scene that is suffocating in the hands of artists and producers who are unwilling to risk failure. We hold that feigned security is an anathema to art. Particularly to live theatre. We hold that risk is a necessary element of successful theater, the means through which we can discover the rare and the truly beautiful. Pencil Productions is our risk.

What We're Doing:

Pencil Productions will be putting up a host of new works at the Producer's Club in New York. That week (December 10th-16th) will include a showcase of short plays going up Thursday December 13th through Sunday December 16th. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets for $15. Also during that week will be a series of free staged readings of longer length plays, details coming in the next few weeks.

What We Need & What You Get

Apart from paying for the space at the Producer's Club we are doing our best to spend as little as possible. The space cost just under 2,500. Getting to 3,500 will allow us to cover the costs for tickets, the indiegogo fee, printing programs, printing scripts, and all of the little expenses that add up. And it's always nice to be able to buy a prop or two.

We are offering a number of different levels of "perks" going from Pencil Pusher at 15 dollars to Pencil Patriot at 500 dollars, with rewards including signed programs, a free ticket to the showcase, and participation in the next Pencil Productions showcase.

The Future

We hope that this is just the first step towards a bright future for Pencil Productions and its collaborators. If everything goes well this December, over the next six months we hope to do another showcase, at least four more staged readings, and at least two fully produced full length plays (which would appear in rep). In addition to exploring new works and new artists, we also hope to explore new spaces, bringing some of our work to non-traditional spaces. We also hope to keep one foot on the conventional path, sending our most successful productions to different festivals and competitions, with an eye on the 2013 New York Fringe Festival.
