Our patrons deserve a nice outdoor patio for enjoying a cocktail and a place to smoke on summer nights! Extended floor, tin roof and new fence is our goal.

Outdoor Enjoyment in East Nashville

For the past year, the Cult Fiction Underground theatre and Black Raven pub at Logue's Black Raven Emporium have provided east Nashvillians with a unique and original counter-cultural destination.  Starting out with an old concrete block building which for decades housed a veterinary clinic, we've turned what was once a former basement kennel into the most atmospheric speakeasy in town, all with a shoestring budget and a lot of sweat.  We've called it a speakeasy because even though it's on a prominent corner where two busy thoroughfares meet, you would never know that such a cool space existed below our upstairs Emporium.  In front, the downstairs is literally underground, and in back there's only an ancient fence with a crude entrance arrow painted on.  Inside, though the speakeasy is long on atmosphere, it has no windows.  Therefore, smoking is not an option, and light is lantern-like.

Besides showing classic grindhouse movies every Friday and Saturday nights in our 37-seat theatre, we've also hosted a Witches' Masquerade Ball, sideshow, burlesque, a blues show, vinyl record sales, our 'Eastside Weirdo Bohemian Bazaar' flea markets, appearances by movie celebrities, New Year's and Valentines' masquerade parties, monthly open mic poetry/spoken word events, screenings by indie filmmakers and more.  Even 80's hitmaker Greg Kihn ('our love's in jeapordy, baybeh...') performed an acoustic set in our intimate theater recently.

In short, we've been able to bring an eclectic mix of events to Nashville over the past year.  Because of a loyal and growing core of true believers, we've kept the rent paid and the lights on, and added what we can in increments.  But one thing we believe we need to better serve our customers is to add an outdoor component to our mix.  Currently, smokers have to stand in a small gated area in back that offers no shelter from rain or snow.  In addition, the gate is falling down.  Instead of an industrial 'back area' we'd like a patio where our patrons can sit down and enjoy the summer evenings, feel the breeze and catch a bit of the beautiful sunsets (the patio area faces west), and enjoy a cocktail and a smoke in comfort.  But 'getting a leg up' financially to do the job is not easy.

We'd like $5,000 to extend the concrete patio flooring, build a new fence, add a tin roof and install electricity for lighting and an overhead fan.  We believe this will really enhance the experience of visiting Logue's Black Raven Emporium and the Cult Fiction Underground and enable us to continue to provide a new and unique forum for underground culture to east Nashville for years to come.  Even if we don't meet our goal of $5000, any money we raise will help us make this new addition a reality.
