Update: Thank you all for helping make this a success! We appreciate all your support and are so excited to finish and show you this film. From Kulap, the Director
In my directorial debut, I explore my tangled family tree to find out who I am. When I was 14, I took my father’s side in an argument and my mother replied, “Why are you defending him? He’s not your real dad.” Twenty years later, I'm finally ready to learn what that means.
Origin Story is a feature-length, international quest with stops in Los Angeles, Minnesota, and Laos to meet the biological father I never knew. On the road, unforeseen revelations strike as hilarious or heartbreaking, rarely in between. An avid comic book reader with a vigilante character named after me in the DC Comics universe, I must summon the courage of Katharsis, because each question is another step out on a limb.
Origin Story is a deeply personal but universally relevant tale of immigration, conflict, addiction, and personal responsibility. Interviewees in the film include my extended family, husband Scott Aukerman, and close friends like Sarah Silverman, Casey Wilson, June Diane Raphael and Howard Kremer.
This project has been a lifetime in the making, and we need your support to get it across the finish line.
I hope by sharing my story in this way, I'll inspire viewers to seek out their own meaning of family and home, regardless of family background or trauma.
Our team has brought passion and dedication to this project, and I want to be able to compensate them for their time and hard work thus far, in addition to finishing the film for the audience it'll eventually reach.
Along with deferred crew payments from production, the money you donate will go toward:
3. Future shoots
4. Music and score
5. Original Artwork
We're excited about the unique perks you'll receive in return for your support. Maybe you need a horoscope reading or personal life coaching session from the hilarious Casey Wilson, or perhaps want to appear on the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast or say a line on the TV show. Or it could be you want to visit the set of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Maybe you just want some swag from Earwolf, or personal shout-outs and postcards from me. In any case, we've got you covered.
We appreciate and are grateful for anything you'd like to contribute to help us meet our goal. We have been extremely lucky to get as far as we have without reaching out to you guys for help, and this campaign will (fingers crossed!) exceed our goal, as we have a long list of friends who have jumped in to help, along with people who have become friends as they offered favors and time to get us to this point, and we would love to be able to compensate them.
Other Ways to Help
Whether or not you can support this project financially, we hope you'll still get involved! Stop by our website, send us love and good vibes, and share this page with your friends. We appreciate you and couldn't do this without you.
