Hi my name is Thomas, I'm from Melbourne Australia and I am the director and co-creator of the story for OCCUPIED.
OCCUPIED is a science fiction/horror film with a 1970's paranoia movie (Paralax View, The Crazies) twist designed as the first entry in a potential new film franchise.
The idea from the film came out of a passion for classic science fiction films shared between myself and writer David Richardson. Both of us were fans of films like Invasion of the body snatchers, The Thing, Day of the triffids and TV shows like Doctor Who, Chocky and the X - Files.
Around 3 and a half to four years ago we started talking about doing a movie together and work quickly began on developing the script for what eventually became Occupied.
This film is a post-modern (in the Christopher Nolan sense of the word... so revisiting a genre and making it relevant for modern audiences) take on an archetypal science fiction concept - The Invasion movie!
I'd love for you to read some more about the project, watch the teaser trailer, engage with us on Facebook and Twitter and become part of getting this unique vision on screens all over the world!
Tormented by his war experiences as a soldier in Afghanistan, Ben arrives home on leave following the death of his mother. He finds that the small country town he grew up in has a strange feel to it, as if something is not quite right. Ben clashes with his cold psychiatrist father Aleksi and begins a romance with Piper, a girl he knew from High School. Still nagging questions about his mother's death and the bizarre secrets that hang over the town plague him. He and Piper start to investigate, and before long, are plunged into a nightmare world of dark secrets. But the real horror begins when Ben discovers his mother was murdered, and that his own father might be at the centre of a deadly, mysterious web that threatens to destroy the entire town...
Why We Are Crowd Funding via Indiegogo
Getting feature films funded is no easy task and there really is no easy or hard way but getting genre films funded in Australia is nearly impossible under any of the popular funding methods (screen australia, film victoria funding etc)!
OCCUPIED has always been a very commercially orientated film aimed at mainstream audiences... Audiences who are looking to embrace a new science fiction franchise that is a little bit different... Pitching this kind of concept in boardrooms is a tough sell but online on a forum like Indiegogo we are hoping to reach our audience before we even comence production.
We are new to the whole concept of Crowdfunding and recently tried (unsuccesfully) to get OCCUPIED funded via Pozible.
We had a very positive experience in attempting to get the film funded via Pozible but found that perhaps the audience was not wide enough for our film after doing more research we found that Indiegogo seemed to represent our audience better and we are hoping that it will!

What We Need & What You GetSince first attempting to get OCCUPIED funded we have had another private investor come on board the project who has filled a shortage in our funding so we have reduced our original target from $85, 000 to $30, 000 this is a target we are still hoping to exceed but is enough money for us to begin shooting the film in May of this year.
- Hiring accomodation for actors and crew to stay on location in Regional Victoria
- Feeding our Cast & Crew
- Paying location fees and shooting permits
- Hiring additional equipment for night shooting
- Props and Models for SFX photography for the film
By supporting us in these key areas you are helping us make the best posible film we can while also enabling us to make this film under safe and harmonious working conditions - which is essential in any low budget film of this kind!
For helping us bridge our funding gap and reaching our target we are offering a range or perks from a thanks on our facebook page (3000 fans and climbing) to a thanks in the movie credits, a crew t-shirt, a crew hat, posters, limited edition artwork, invitations to screenings, DVD and Bluray copies of the film and more...
But ultimately supporting a film like OCCUPIED has to be about more than these small perks - for us its about building a community of supporters and collaborators and fostering a strong grassroots activisim in our home country to get genre films back on our cinema screens!
Australia has created many great genre classics over the years from Mad Max to Razorback, Patrick and many more but these kind of films have been missing from our multiplexes for a very long time... Occasionally one sneaks through like Wolf Creek or Iron Sky but its been quite a drought...
We'd love you to come on board OCCUPIED and lend your voice to getting this film made. As part of our OCCUPIED community we will invite you to actively participate in the making of this film - from giving your opinion on posters, trailers, first edits to final masters as well as sharing in all the triumphs and struggles to get the film made along the way!
I think the impact of getting OCCUPIED part one funded via Indiegogo will be huge!!! Absolutely huge and not just for me, the actors and crew working hard to get the film made but for everyone who contributes a dollar or more to this campaign!
Firstly this film will impact heavily on the way ultra low budget genre films are financed in Australia (and in many other ways around the world) as we wll be able to demonstrate that you can produce an amazing high quality film on a very low budget.
Secondly it will launch what we intend to be a trilogy of films that all take place in the OCCUPIED universe. So we can start finalizing scripts for parts two and three and begin the process of getting them funded independently and into cinemas.
Thirdly this film will be great for genre fans as there hasn't been a film like OCCUPIED before - it breaks new ground in the genre by offering a low budget serious science fiction horror film that has just as many amazing story and plot points as it does amazing performances and amazing special FX.On a personal note as a director I have an incredibly long track record of delivering high concept visual ideas on low budgets... But this work has always been confined to Television Commercials, Music Videos and Short Films (though I did help co-write, produce and shoot a feature in 2006 which was made for less than 10k and did very well) by supporting this film you are helping support me and my production team to take this track record into the feature film arena. Allowing me to give audiences a big scale epic movie on the catering budget of most big scale epic movies!
Other Ways You Can HelpHelping us get OCCUPIED made doesn't stop here on Indiegogo!

- Blog about the film and whats going on with it
- Hold a cake sale at your work and donate the proceedings for a perk
- Lend some support as a crew member

And if you work for a company or own a company you could help us by:
