Summary of the Film Project:
"Not in My name" will be a 40 minute documentary film showing an honest and direct portrayal of young Jews in Canada who explore the ways they were taught about Zionism and the implicit silences about Israel/Palestine with which they grew up. With personal risk, they choose to speak.
There are real implications to this film. The government of Canada has historically shown unconditional support of Israel. Among many types of support, Canada has signed free trade and security pacts and supplies critical weapon components for the Israeli military. Canada claims to have the backing of the entire Jewish community in doing so.
"Not in My Name" shows a different reality of Jewish opinion. The people interviewed in this film carefully examine the ways in which they learned and unlearned about Israel/Palestine, and at what point, and how, they began to question and understand the reality of the situation. They look to aspects of their history and culture for inspiration in speaking out. They talk about the difficulty of asking hard questions and the personal costs of doing so- family tensions and loss of certain parts of their community. But, to do so is crucial as great wrongs are committed in their name. To live with silence creates a painful impasse in the community and has detrimental and tragic consequences for Palestinians.
"Not in my name."
I have worked in human rights, the arts and social work with communities in Canada, the US, Mexico, Honduras, and Uganda.
My filmwork has focused on the environmental and human impacts of Canadian industries both in Canada and in Latin America, Indigenous land issues, Enbridge pipelines and the tar sands, identity politics and complicity in injustices, biography, and history of social struggles. I recently faciliated a series of youth film-making workshops ImagineNative Film and Video Tour in northern communities. http://imaginenative.org/home/node/2379

"Not in My Name" is a personally very important project for me. Silence around Israel has impacted many people around me and I believe it has a direct impact on Palestinians. Silence enables ongoing oppression. It also creates an enormous amount of tension and problems in families and communities. The questions of fear, complicity, guilt and responsibility, and historical and intergenerational trauma and violence are questions that I explore and continue to explore in much of my work.
I believe this project has the potential to be poweful in helping to break a pervasive silence around zionism, Israel, and complicity that can have widespread impacts in not only the diasporic Jewish community, but in many communities that struggle with oppression, violence, and complexities of guilt. I very much hope, too, that it can have an effect of lessoning the oppression against Palestinians as Jews are able to increasingly voice dissent and question more openly what is done in our name.
What We Need
Up to this point, I have self-funded this project and have put in over 150 hours and months of foundational work. The final video will be 40 minutes long.
Your support will go a long way and will be a great help in making this film useful and powerful:
- Replacing a much needed microphone
- Covering ongoing editing and post-production costs
- Distribution costs (creating and sending out DVDs, entering it into relevant festivals and screenings.)
- Publicity (time and costs in getting the word out)
Also, you or your organization could be listed in the film as a producer/supporter as a way of further spreading the message and backing the need for these kinds of ideas to be voiced.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you can't help fund it, please help me share it!! I hope that this can raise some good discussion, too. Thanks!
Also, if you are a part of a group/organization that cannot fund it, but still support it, it would still be great to have the group's name in it as backing the project and showing support for the message! Please contact me if this is the case. Thanks!!
