Who is Shanna and Why NOLS?
Hello! My name is Shanna Barrow and I am a 21 year old Industrial Design/Jewelry & Metalsmithing student at MassArt. I am passionate about improving living conditions for humans and animals and protecting the environment. With one year of school and my ID degree project left before graduation, I am trying to branch out and gain skills and experience that will help me excel as a female designer and aid me in strengthening my focus on sustainable design.
I am trying to secure a spot in the summer 2013 National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Alaska Backpacking & Packrafting course. NOLS courses are structured to provide intensive leadership skills training, an education in environmental ethics, and an immersive crash course in technical wilderness skills. This unique combination fits my goals and interests perfectly and will be invaluable to my future career.
updates: Many people aren't sure what Industrial Designers actually do. An explanation of what ID is to me can be found under the "Updates" tab at the top of this page.
I have also posted several videos that provide more information about the value of NOLS programs! Check them out!
NOLS generously gave me until March 8th to give them a final answer about my enrollment. This results of this campain will determine the answer I give.
What I Need & What You Get
What I Need:
If I reach the $5600 goal I have set for this campaign, I will have enough to make my tuition/insurance payment to NOLS to secure my spot in the course (I have factored in the cost of Indiegogo and Paypal fees as well as the cost to produce and ship perks). If I don't reach that goal, I get no money, and you get your money back. If I meet this goal, I will commit to taking the course. However, between the cost of equipment that I have to purchase and the cost of my transport to and from Alaska, I will need an additional $1,300 to cover the rest of my expenses. So my total goal for this trip is closer to $6,900.
If your funding exceeds my expenses for this trip, I will donate any extra to the NOLS scholarship fund to help someone else have access to this incredible opportunity.
Perks! - WildWhere Rings
As perks, I am offering one of the first chances to receive a handcrafted piece of jewelry from a line that stemmed directly from one of my design projects. Each WildWhere ring features a species that is considered either threatened or endangered, and comes in a handmade keepsake pouch that includes information about the species’ condition. The goal of the project was to create a line of wearable jewelry that helped people feel a stronger connection to wildlife while providing an easy way to spark conversations that spread awareness about wildlife preservation and the threat of extinction. My long-term goal is to expand the line significantly and use it to raise money for wildlife conservation.
I make all the rings by hand, and the process is slow, so I can only offer a very limited number at this time. I am currently in the process of finishing the first cast of the rings in bronze, as well as adding the 4th species, a Morelet’s Tree Frog. The other animals currently available are Madagascar Red Owls, Sea Otters, and Grizzly Bears. All animals are available in ½ sizes from 5 ½ -8, and whole sizes 9-10. Grizzly Bears are also available in 11 and 11 ½. As an added bonus, producing your perk rings will help me refine my production process and move me further along in my goal of expanding the WildWhere line. I will be working on the rings throughout the duration of this campaign and will post updates on my progress. There are pictures further down the page.
Please Note: The inside of my bronze rings are coated with jewelry-grade lacquer to reduce the chance of tarnish, however there is still a chance that the skin touching the ring will take on a greenish tone. This is standard for any copper-based jewelry and washes off fairly quickly, but some people may prefer resin or silver jewelry because of this.
After the fundraiser ends, I will contact anyone who has claimed a ring perk for their size, colour, and animal preference. I will mail all of the rings claimed as perks before the start of my course, hopefully sooner. They take time to make, so the most of the work will be completed after the semester ends in May.
Other Ways You Can Help
Donations of any amount are enormously appreciated! $1 is $1 closer to my goal. If you cannot afford to support financially, that’s ok. Anyone can have a huge impact on this by helping spread the word. I don’t have a huge internet presence, so I would absolutely love it if you shared this page through your twitter, blog, tumblr, website, or anywhere else! Indiegogo also has share tools that make it super easy.
Thank you so much! And check back often for updates!
