Painting Happier, Healthier Communities
The Nicaragua Mural Project is the first project by the Abel Arts Collective, a nonprofit (501(c)3 status in the works!) that partners with artists, developmental organizations and communities to create meaningful and inspirational public art projects.
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to create and experience art, especially youth. We think art allows people to express themselves and can make people happier and healthier. We think public art has the ability to transform a space and positively impact a community.
For our first project, we're traveling to Gigante, a small village in Nicaragua, to create a mural with the local youth group and Health Committee on the newly constructed Community Health Center. Our partner nonprofit, Project WOO, has led the Health Committee in developing the Center after a community census in Gigante identified access to community health as the village's biggest need.
Until now, the closest clinic was 15 kilometers away. A doctor comes to visit the village every 2 weeks, seeing patients in a church with less than adequate conditions. The community was in need of their own clinic that offered privacy, running water, electricity, and comfort.
The Gigante Health Committee wants the Center to be bright and happy, encouraging locals to get the access to the health services and education they need in an inviting atmosphere. We will concept the mural with the local youth group, people of Gigante and our partners before inviting all to participate in the painting of the mural. Our goal is to create something meaningful for the community with the community, something we hope strengthens the success of the Center.

Where Your $$ Goes
We are raising $5000 to cover the cost of our trip. This will cover our art supplies (paint, paint brushes, tarps, tape, buckets, etc) and the cost of our travel to/from Nicaragua and lodging it Gigante.
Additional funds raised will be donated between nonprofits:
- Project Woo and Surf for Life to support their existing and upcoming development projects in Central America (half of extra funds raised after our goal)
- Abel Arts Collective to support our next art development project (half of extra funds raised after goal)
We started the Abel Arts Collective after working with several nonprofits to raise money for their humanitarian and environmental causes through donations from Erik Abel's art. While we loved giving back through donations, we wanted to pursue a more hands on project that was centered around the positive impacts art creates and find a way for other artists to do the same. So, we started our own organization that will allow people everywhere to experience the joy in creating art and the benefits public art offers to a community. This project in Nicaragua is our pilot, using Erik as our guinea pig to determine the best way to coordinate philanthropic art projects before bringing other artists in the future.
We've partnered with Project WOO and Surf for Life, two merging nonprofits that work across Central America. These amazing organizations promote sustainable community development through the construction of educational and community centers. They work with local communities to address their greatest challenges and bring much needed services to underserved communities.
