My name is Nia King and I am a queer mixed-race art activist. I use zines, comics, short films, and most recently, a podcast to share the stories of queer and trans people of color. I have been running my podcast, We Want the Airwaves, since March 2013. On each episode, I interview a different queer or trans artist of color about their life and work. This month, I published my 30th episode, featuring the lovely Lexi Adsit.
One of the things that is unique about my podcast it that I have every episode transcribed to make it accessible for deaf audiences. I make all the transcripts available for free, but it costs me $50 an episode to have the podcast transcribed. I am asking you to donate today so I can continue to make transcriptions available and keep the podcast deaf-accessible.
What We Need & What You Get
I am setting a low goal, because Indiegogo takes almost twice as much if you don't reach your goal than if you too. But secretly, I have big dreams:
- If I raise $500 I will be able to have the rest of this year's episodes transcribed.
If I raise $1000, I will be able to make the podcast free for the rest of 2014!
The mainstream media allows very few queer and trans people of color to tell their stories. My work is creating an alternative archive that documents the life-changing work of queer and trans artists of color, and enables their legacies to be shared across time and space.
