The New Masculinites Festival
Working from our values of love, play, and peace, Man Question uses a theatre-based workshop to address masculinity, grow community, and create possibilities for new gender expressions--in order to create a world free of gender-based oppression in which every person has the power to play with and create their own identities.
In 2011 we created the first New Masculinites Festival as a way to bring more people into the conversation. Through performances and dialogue, the festival explores the impacts that the expectations of masculinity have had on our lives, and invites people to begin to create new, less scripted versions of manhood.
The festival takes place on Sunday, February 9 at the 30th Street Theatre. 259 West 30th Street, New York, New York. Exact times to be announced.
We Need Your Help to Make it Happen!
Here's what we're raising money for:
- Space: It's NYC, so space comes at a premium. But we are working to get a very good deal.
- Tech: It's important to us to keep the integrity of the work, and that often requires tech. This translates to rentals, and tech professionals to help us make a great show.
- Print materials: Programs!
- Artists Expenses : Our artists are generously donating their time and talent to the festival, but some of them are traveling to be here, and we want to reimburse them.
We have some fun perks you receive if you donate! Check them out to the right.
The conversation about how the expectations of masculinity have impacted us, is one that is rarely happening. Furthermore, there is not enough work to remedy the negative impacts. This festival seeks to do just that, and to make space for folks to create new definitions for masculinity.
