New Eyes provides free prescription eyeglasses to those less fortunate in the US, and has been offered a generous dollar-for-dollar matching gift of $60,000 that only you can help us achieve.
If you wear glasses, try to get through one day without them. Make your meals, drive your car, catch your train or bus, do your work or go to class. Attend to all your responsibilities and see how you do. Me? I know my day would be a non-starter without my glasses. I’d be hard-pressed to find my way out of bed.
But I’m lucky, and maybe you are too. I have the resources to buy my glasses so I can lead a full and productive life. But not everyone is so lucky. Decisions are made when finances are squeezed: pay the heating bill or buy glasses; feed the kids or buy glasses; pay the rent or buy glasses. Glasses lose out every time. Clear vision is a luxury that people in financial need cannot afford - but those glasses are the key to a productive and meaningful life. You can help break the cycle!
Since 1932, New Eyes has provided new prescription eyeglasses to those in financial need living in the United States. We give children and adults the tool they need to navigate their way to a successful life - a basic pair of glasses. It’s simple yet powerful.
Right now, New Eyes has over 900 individuals on our wait list who need eyeglasses. The sharp increase in applications for new glasses has outstripped our funding and for the first time in our history, New Eyes is not accepting new applications except from a few states for which we have specific limited funding. We know there are literally thousands of people who need our help, but we just do not have the funding to assist them.
An anonymous donor has generously offered a $60,000 matching gift to New Eyes to help these 900 people and more, but we need your assistance to receive that gift. Please give - your donation will change lives!
What We Need & What You Get
New Eyes needs $60,000 (in conjunction with our matching $60,000 gift) to purchase new prescription eyeglasses to clear our wait list of over 900 disadvantaged individuals and to meet the need for new applications. The average price for a new pair of prescription glasses in the United States is $244. New Eyes pays an average of $56 per pair. We work through a voucher system where approved New Eyes applicants receive a voucher. With that voucher, they can go to any optical dispenser to have their eyeglasses made as long as the dispenser is willing to accept our reimbursement rates. The voucher represents full payment for the eyeglasses. It can not be used as a partial payment - the voucher is meant for the absolute neediest individuals who have no other resources with which to buy eyeglasses. We have a wide network of optical dispensers who work with New Eyes; in our fiscal year of 2012-13, we helped people in 46 states and Washington, D.C.
If we do not meet our matching, we will use your donation to buy new eyeglasses for the needy and your money will go directly to the individuals who have been waiting longest. We may not be able to clear our wait list, but your financial gift will buy glasses for someone in need in the U.S.
