Several years ago, I swore I’d never buy another plastic baggie.
Sure enough, I found myself wanting one! I was sick of washing out plastic bags and felt guilty every time I threw one away. But I needed something small and malleable to fit in a tight spot in a lunch box. Figuring someone had already invented such a bag, I combed the Internet. I found lots of reusable bags but none of them was what I was looking for.
So I set out to create my own reusable bag that had all the features I was looking for:
- created with food storage in mind
- could be used hundreds of times
- allowed you to see the contents inside without opening it
- made with food safe materials (BPA-, PHTHALATE-, AND PVC-FREE)
- easy to wash, dishwasher or washing machine safe
- no velcro closure (food gets stuck in velcro)
Before my children were born, I worked in the restaurant business. Once a mom, I wanted work with more flexible hours so I took my hobby of interior design and grew it into a residential design firm that offered clients sustainable design. I learned all about environmentally friendly products and practices along the way. I also developed an appreciation for minimalism.
So when I decided to create neat-os I put these two experiences together: I wanted a clean, minimalist, eco-conscious design that I could also imagine being used by the chefs I had worked with. The clean design allowed the option to personalize the bags so anyone could put fun drawings, patterns or labels on them.
I researched and experimented, made a prototype, got feedback from my community, especially my kids, found a manufacturer, tested and experimented some more, decided on sizes and colors to offer, and opened for e-business. In the process, I discovered that the bags I'd created keep your fresh food fresh longer, which is why we are now launching a new size: the Produce Bag (see perks).
Two of our main goals at neat-os are global sustainability and making it easy for busy people to be more eco-conscious and do away with single use disposable items. By pledging on Indiegogo, you are joining the reusable movement or stepping up your commitment if you're already a passionate member of this movement.
neat-os come in a variety of sizes to accommodate your needs. In addition to functional, efficient food storage, neat-os have a myriad of other uses, see lots of them here.

Why neat-os needs your help
Sounds good so far, right? Well I kept selling out! The manufacturer I found at first couldn't make enough bags for the demand and produced bags of inconsistent quality. I put production on hold until I could find someone who could grow with me and make a top quality product consistently. Although it cost most to have the bags made in the US, it is something I am committed to. It took a year and a half, but I finally found someone -- and in my backyard! I now have a new manufacturer in Los Angeles, 20 minutes from my home. Supporting local economies is another tenet of the neat-os mission so I'm especially thrilled.
However, the minimum orders with this new manufacturer are much higher and we need more machines to make the bags. I am hoping to raise $30,000 to cover these costs. The money will allow me to purchase:
- $4,000 in fabrics
- $2,000 in zippers
- $15,000 for local assembly and production
- $9,000 for machines (sewing, serger, and pad printing machines)
neat-os is firmly committed to global sustainability and supporting local economies. We believe in:
- Top quality, design and functionality in product development
- Thoughtful consumption, minimal environmental impact, and supporting groups that work to clean up the environment, proud member of 1% for the Planet!
- Job creation in the US and supporting local economies
- Building a community around a shared outlook for a better future
Mostly, I am thrilled that neat-os makes it easier for people to be more environmentally friendly. I love hearing the many ways people are using them, so once you get your neat-os be sure to share with us on our blog or on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram!
