Our Story

The National Speedskating Museum & Hall of Fame (NSMHOF) is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Pettit National Ice Center (PNIC), one of only two Olympic speedskating training facilities in the United States.  Our history began in 1960 when the Amateur Skating Union formed a Hall of Fame.  Since then 169 athletes and contributors have been inducted.

For the next forty years, several cities hosted a speedskating museum before we finally found our home at the PNIC.  Our museum collection includes thousands of objects from the past 100 years, from early skates and trophies to Wheaties boxes and an Olympic torch carried by Bonnie Blair Cruikshank and Dan Jansen at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games.

The NSMHOF is the only institution solely dedicated to the history of speedskating in the United States.  We exist to preserve the history of the sport and to honor its athletes and contributors.  Through the museum collection, temporary exhibits, and advocacy of the sport, the NSMHOF serves as an educational institution to document the rich history of speedskating for current and future generations.

Our goal is to raise money to buy archival supplies for the inventory, re-housing, and conservation of the collections and also for the future expansion of exhibits and enhanced website for the museum.  This would allow us to reach a wider audience beyond the PNIC.

Unfortunately, archival supplies are expensive, but crucial to maintain the integrity of the artifacts.  One archival storage box costs $10.50, and 100 photograph storage envelopes cost $54.75.  These supplies will prevent the deterioration of the objects and safeguard them for years to come.

Your Impact

Your donation will help grow and sustain the NSMHOF and honor the Hall of Fame Members by preserving the history for the dedicated athletes and enthusiasts who have given so much of their lives to speedskating.  In addition, funds will help share the story of speedskating to visitors to the Museum & Hall of Fame and through a future virtual museum.

Let’s make it happen!

What We Need

Our goal is to raise $10,000$5,000 will go toward purchasing archival supplies such as boxes, folders, and photograph envelopes.  $5,000 will go toward the future expansion of the Museum & Hall of Fame.
