Hi. My name is Kimberly Knox. I am an inventor, and it just so happens that I also have Bipolar I.

Not long ago I was sitting in the art room of a psychiatric hospital at about 4:00 a.m.  Again. Crazy, right?  You bet, and at the time, nothing weighed heavier on my mind than figuring out what I could do about this condition once and for all.

I decided to begin tracking my different moods so I could understand myself better. I assembled five colored pencils and a notebook and began creating charts that tracked how I felt, my blood pressure and pulse before and after meditating, my sleep patterns and changes in medications. Day after day I kept track of all of this information with the hope that one day I would better understand how my mind was functioning.

Charting all of this information three times each day took an enormous amount of time and energy. I knew there had to be an easier way. That’s when I began thinking:

What if I were to create a quick and precise way to size myself up mentally, emotionally and physically throughout the day? What if I could create reminders to take my medications and supplements?  And what if I could accurately chart all of this information – including how I was feeling, sleeping and meditating for my personal reflection, or to share with my physician or therapist? This might help me start to pull my life together.”

With the help of two brilliant program developers – Adam Harris and Carson Whitsett of Ditty Labs – I put all of these ideas into a new mobile app available on the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android devices called Mood Watch. Endorsed by the International Bipolar Foundation, Mood Watch empowers people who have mood disorders (like me) with tools that can help them live happier and more productive lives.

And better still, Mood Watch isn’t just for the few who are very sick, but for the many who have a depression that hangs on a little too heavily and for too long, for anxiety that unsteadies the hand and a feeling of an unnamed uneasiness that colors whole days—chalked up to “normal” when we know it’s not.  Poor feelings we have no words for, we just don’t feel right even though nothing’s really wrong.  Mood Watch is perfect for a whole lot of us.

Mood Watch makes it simple to keep track of how you’re feeling throughout the day so you can better understand your mood patterns. It also makes it easier to have a proactive discussion with your doctor or therapist about the unique feelings you’ve experienced between office visits.

Here's how it works:

  • When you wake up in the morning you evaluate your overall feeling, mark the number of hours you slept and the quality of your sleep.
  • Next, take your blood pressure and pulse with a wrist monitor. We recommend a wrist monitor which costs about $18. It’s worth every penny, and the measurements lend a powerful biofeedback aspect to the program.
  • After you take your blood pressure and pulse we advise you to meditate for 3 - 5 minutes before taking your blood pressure and pulse again. If you don't notice a difference before and after, you will with a bit of practice. Over time you will become calmer and you'll find that your body will remain calmer (with practice) even when your mind might be a few steps ahead.
  • Next, with Mood Watch you will begin constructing your chart.  By sliding buttons into place, you are able to rate your levels of anxiety, your overall mood, level of calmness, focus and/or mindfulness and energy on a scale of negative 5 to positive 5.  You’ll see these patterns immediately reflected in the weekly view. And each of these categories are fully customizable.  For example, just tap on the word, "calm" and change it to "joy" if you'd like to track this emotion instead.
  • If you have specific details about your day that you'd like to record, you can add personal notes describing your morning, afternoon and evening.  These notes can be particularly valuable in interpreting your chart later.
  • Clicking on the Report icon at any time during the week will allow you to examine all the information you’ve recorded. These beautiful and easy-to-read reports can be used for your personal reference, or emailed to your physician or therapist for discussion during your next office visit.
  • Mood Watch also offers you the ability to enter the names of the supplements or medications you are taking so you can track whether you're following your regimen as planned or as directed by your physician.
  • For more general information, the Info button provides general information about the app, an "Alarms" button to serve as a reminder to chart your overall well being, and a "Feedback button to share your Mood Watch experience. It’s that simple.
