I am a mother and business women in a small Saskatchewan town. A member of our church has a daughter who has been living and working with a mission in Moldova for nearly 2 years now and has helped us learn of the great need in this forgotten part of Europe. We have formed a group of six people to travel to Moldova from Aug. 4 to Aug. 18, 2012 to take part in an outreach program.
Without putting too fine a point on it, the country is in bad shape. Moldova is known as the poorest country in Europe. Extreme poverty exists in the villages and towns—annual income can be as low as $250. Unemployment is around 80% and many people rely on the produce from their land as their only source of income. Moldova has many social problems due to parents leaving the country to find work. Human trafficking and alcoholism are rampant.
Here's an example of why we are passionate about going to this country to help... A member of the mission in Moldova was in a village and discovered a home that had only two occupants: a six year old and a 4 month old baby. The children had lice and had not eaten in at least 4 days. Most of us can't imagine such poverty!
Trust is a big issue in this country. Following many years of corruption, people are very reluctant to trust. As foreigners, we are able to build bridges between the group that is working to bring aid and the people who need it. We will be engaging in children's programs and bringing supplies to the elderly.
We have raised most of our support for our flights and costs while there, so your donation will not go toward our costs. We will use the money we raise here to bring supplies with us from Canada for the children. Just a few dollars will enable us to bring things like crayons and inflatable balls to give to the kids. $100 will purchase badly needed food supplies for the elderly. $1,000 will build a playground—they actually don't have these!
There has been a change and I will be joining my group in the trekking adventure. Originally I had planned to do a cycling adventure while the rest of my group went trekking. The video at the top shows a trekking group from 2011.
For your donation of $10 we will send you a photo of our team and a personal greeting. If you make a donation of $100, I will also send you a digital copy of Prairies North: the magazine of Saskatchewan (this is my business). If you make a donation of $1,000 or more, we will include all of the above and send you a video of us in Moldova.
If we raise more than our goal of $1,000, the money will be used for programs to rescue young women and children from the human trafficking industry or for operating a day centre for children. So, don't stop at $1,000! We are contributing this money directly to the group in Moldova so every penny will be used to help them.
If you can't contribute, that's OK. We want to let people know about Moldova and the great need in this country, so share our campaign. You can also send people here: http://www.md.om.org/ for more information. Prayers for our group are most welcome.
Thank you so much for reading through. Hope to connect with you from Moldova!
