5 Guys Named Moe!

Multi-award winning Midtown Productions is excited to announce its first-ever participation in the MOJA Arts Festival with the Louis Jordan musical Five Guys Named MoeMOJA is a Celebration of African-American and Caribbean Art that is now in its 30th year. Bringing Five Guys Named Moe to MOJA is not only a great way to pay tribute to jazz legend Louis Jordan, it also shines a light on the significant part African-Americans played in developing Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues.

Who's Louis Jordan?

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame calls Louis Jordan the “Father of Rhythm & Blues” and “Grandfather of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Jordan’s jazzy, jump blues style made him one of the most successful crossover artists in American music history.

To this day, Louis Jordan ranks as the top black recording artist of all time in terms of the total weeks at #1—his records stayed in the No.1 position a staggering 113 weeks (Stevie Wonder comes in a distant second, with 70 weeks). Moreover, many notable musicians have cited Louis Jordan as an influence, from Bill Haley to James Brown to Amy Winehouse.

The Show

In 1990, Jordan's music was turned into the hit musical Five Guys Named Moe. Described as, "rollicking look at a man whose 'whole theory of life was to make audiences smile or laugh,'" Five Guys Named Moe captures the boisterous and comedic musical style that set Jordan apart from his contemporaries.

Our production brings Moe to Charleston for the first time! We've got 6 incredibly talented local performers who are eager to do Louis Jordan proud as Nomax, Big Moe, Little Moe, Four-Eyed Moe, Eat Moe, and No Moe. We'll be posting videos and pictures throughout the rehearsal process, so be sure to check out our amazing cast!

What We Need

Our Indiegogo goal of $15,000 is only part of our full budget. If we receive donations that exceed our total budget of $25,000, that money will go towards The Art of Play Scholarship Fund for low income students at our Charleston Acting Studio & Theatre. Here's how your generous donations will be dispersed:

Why Donate?

Considering the huge impact he had on music, many people haven't heard of Louis Jordan. Even "theatre people" aren't familiar with Five Guys Named Moe, despite its critical acclaim and Broadway success. Midtown Productions has been given a great opportunity to showcase Jordan's music in the 30th annual MOJA Arts Festival. If you donate to this project, you're helping us pay tribute to an under-appreciated music legend with a spectacular show at the historic Dock Street Theatre. You're also supporting a talented group of local artists, scoring yourself a sweet tax deduction, and picking up some cool perks along the way!

Other Ways to Help

Come see the show! We want everybody to see Moe, but if you're strapped for cash we certainly understand. Just spreading the word about Moe, MOJA, or this fundraising campaign would be a huge help to us.

Live theatre cannot exist without community support, so Midtown Productions is always looking for volunteers. If you want to help out behind the scenes, need a creative outlet, or a worthy cause to donate to, seek us out!
