MobilECG Laboratories Ltd. was founded in February 2013 with one specific goal in mind: make clinical-grade diagnostic ECG devices available and affordable for everyone.
MobilECG is a lightweight 12-lead diagnostic ECG device that costs only $299, allowing even patients to buy it for themselves and provide reliable 12-lead measurements for doctors.
More people die annually from heart diseases than from any other cause according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
ECG was a revolutionary invention in the recognition of these life-threatening conditions. Since its introduction, ECG has had one of the biggest impacts on modern medicine, just like antibiotics. We believe that with our new, 21th century solution more people can have access to clinical-grade electrocardiography than ever.
Regular medical screening plays an important role in prevention. Proper screening requires 12-lead diagnostic ECG machines, which are usually expensive and hard to use.

How does mobilECG make a difference?
12-lead recording is required to properly diagnose cardiac ischemia and arrhythmia. Cardiac ischemia is a precursor to heart attack. Ischemic heart diseases are also the most common cause of death in Western countries.
While most 12-lead diagnostic ECG machines cost thousands of dollars, we have been working very hard to reduce the price without sacrificing the quality.

The free software will guide you through the measurement with voice instructions. It will detect common mistakes, for example, wrong electrode placement or improper contact.

The mobilECG wireless adapter
We will design a wireless adapter after the first batch of ECGs has been successfully manufactured. It will be a small device with a battery which will enable hours of wireless ECG recording (one record is usually shorter than a minute).
$500000+ stretch goal: we will ship the wireless adapters with the first batch of ECGs.
$600000+ stretch goal: iPhone and iPad support.
Engineers will be able to connect mobilECG to their systems and develop new applications.
How can mobilECG be so affordable?
We get this question a lot. There are no tricks, there is no catch. We have worked really hard to achieve it.
We have not only implemented the latest technologies, but also spent long working hours to minimize the number of hardware components.
In order to achieve our goal, we also needed to break several conventions:
- No separate device and cable. The ECG electronics are built inside the cable.
- No retailers. You can buy the device directly from the manufacturer.
- Low price margin. We aim to be affordable for more people.
- Crowdfunding. We need your help to make this a reality.
Development and production timeline
Currently we have a working prototype of the hardware that needs to be finalized and then certified. Here is the projected timeline:
February 2013 – July 2013
During this pre-crowdfunding period, we designed and manufactured our first working prototype that clearly proves the concept of mobilECG while paying careful attention to the relevant medical standards.
August 2013 – September 2013
Tamás and László joined the team. We were busy finishing our promo video and the initial version of the software. Gergely joined the team at the end of September.
October 2013 – March 2014
We are planning to finalize the hardware and the manufacturing process until February, then start the certification at the end of March. In the meantime, we will finish the development of the software and the services.
April 2014 - June 2014
2-3 months will most likely be enough to deal with all the initial difficulties and get mobilECG through the certification process.
The first batch of mobilECGs is expected to be manufactured and ready for shipping.

Risks and challenges
Despite the professional experience of our team, this project still has risks and challenges, just like any other start-up project.
Getting the device through the certification process is always risky. There is a chance that despite all the effort it will not meet some of the requirements at first. This usually requires a partial redesign and leads to a longer development time. We have already addressed this risk by buying test equipment and testing our prototype.
We have tested our prototype against a significant part of the requirements. One of the exceptions is the electromagnetic compatibility test, which exceeds the capabilities of our lab. Luckily, it is possible to buy time in an EMC test lab, which is what we are going to do.
Before starting the certification process, we will not only run the tests manually, but also consult the experts of the German certification company (TÜV).
One of the electronic components could run out of stock before we can start the manufacturing. We have addressed this risk by choosing parts that are available from at least 3 distributors.
We did an extensive research to find any patents that could stop us from making affordable diagnostic ECG devices. If it turns out that we have missed something, we will hire a lawyer to find workarounds for all the obstacles that stand in our way of delivering mobilECG to the people who need it.
Our team consists of 3 young Hungarian engineers and a medical doctor. We have more than 16 years of combined experience in software and hardware engineering, including ECG design.
Péter Isza - Founder and Chief Engineer
Péter has more than 5 years of experience in software and hardware engineering, including the design of an ECG device that went into production. He invested his personal savings in the company to develop the initial prototype. He is responsible for making the hardware meet all the desired specifications and standards.
Tamás Besenyei - Software Engineer
Tamás is a senior software engineer with 5 years of experience in mostly web-based technologies and handling of large datasets. He works together with Péter on the user interfaces and is responsible for creating a robust web service infrastructure.
Gergely Joós M.D. - Medical Adviser
Gergely is a medical doctor and currently a Ph.D. student of a frontline research center. He believes that novel solutions like mobilECG have the potential to contribute to a better and more accessible healthcare. He consults the engineering team in medical aspects.
László Szabados - Adviser
László is the CEO and founder of Enterprise Solutions Ltd. (Hungary). He has not only 6 years of experience in software engineering, but is also the owner of a successful start-up company that has not stopped growing since it was founded. He gives advice in critical marketing and design decisions.
