This Fundraiser has been put together by the new Board of Directors at the Meg Perry Center. Many of us have only been serving for 6 months now, having stepped in when the center was at the brink of closing for financial reasons. We helped to turn that around in a very short time, and were working on new infrastructure and programming when we were given a 30 day notice that our landlord wanted to begin renovating towards retail space, and we were left without a home for the center.
Starting over from scratch isn't easy, but we are dedicated to finding a new location for the Meg Perry Center! In the last six years, the center has been an incubator for many now thriving groups, as well as a safe, educational space for many new organizers. It has been a place for young local artists to display their work, and a place for new leaders to run workshops and lead discussions. It has already made positive change in the neighborhoods of Portland, and we want not only to continue to foster and empower the abilities of our local community, but to expand our outreach!
What We Need & What You Get
The goal of this fundraiser is to jump-start the new Meg Perry Center! With the money we receive from this campaign, we are hoping to be able to pay our first month's rent and security deposit in a new location (once we find the right one). Depending on the success of this campaign and the cost of rent, we will also be putting this money towards necessities for the space such as paper goods and cleaning supplies, and maybe even smalls repairs or modifications that the space needs.
If we can raise the money needed for the first month, we will be able to put all of our energy into starting our programs right back up, increasing our membership, and promoting our new space! We have some money saved up currently, but its not quite enough to move into a new space. It will take us a little time to transition depending on where we end up, and we also know that there may be unexpected costs or utilities that need to be accounted for.
If this campaign is successful, we can start off on solid ground and put our time and energy into the most important part- building community. The more events and workshops we have- the more you will be able to take advantage of your membership!
However, if we don't reach our goal, we will continue fund-raising and writing grants until we are ready and able. Though finding a new space hasn't been an easy task, we hope to open our doors back up as soon as possible, and will do whatever that takes. It may be a month, or two months, or three months from now, but the MPC lives on!
Portland has a lot to offer, but many of the spaces here are commercial, and it can be hard for new grassroots organizers, youth, and low income individuals to afford or feel comfortable and empowered. The Meg Perry Center has historically worked to be one of the most affordable and accessible community spaces, but thats not all! It has also been a hub of diversity which brought together a variety of people with different skill levels and resources. Working alongside each other in our community center, we were able to create a unique community of trust and respect, a perfect environment for learning.
Your donation to the Meg Perry Center is a pledge to help empower the community of Portland, Maine in order to Make Positive Change. That's our motto at the MPC. Every young high school student who gets to organize their own event and feel supported, every mother who can bring her children to a safe space while she learns about something she was once passionate about, every refugee who talks to his or her new community about their experiences and is listened too.. its all important to us, to our community, and to the world we interact with.
We had a great history of being an all ages, mixed use, affordable space on Congress Street. While times have been a bit rougher lately, we continuously become more passionate about making our new space even better. We hope that you will be too.
Other Ways You Can Help
We understand that not everyone is able to donate monetarily, but we are thankful you took the time to read this campaign and hear about the center. Could you take the time to share it with your networks and help us reach our goal? The more people we reach, the more success we will have, and the faster we can move into a new and better space! Nowadays, its much easier to send out an email, make a facebook post, or tweet on Twitter!
And don't forget to keep an eye on us! Once we open back up, we will be needing volunteers to help coordinate events and help us manage the space. You can keep updated with us on facebook or by our website. Thank you again for all of your time and thoughts.
