Make 2015 The Last Unfair Election
For months we have been working on a campaign website that will spell it
all out – Why Every Vote Should Count! Why Proportional Representation will
create the solid foundation we need to deal with the most important issues of
our time – climate change, income inequality, a stable economy and fair
representation for women and minorities.
Canada's Winner-Take-All Electoral System gives skewed results where a government that only gets 39% of the popular vote can receive 100% of the power. Then, that government can ideologically change the policies of the country without the approval of the 61% of voters who voted for something else. In addition to this unfair by-product of our system, close to 1/2 of all votes in every election don't elect anyone and those voters are unrepresented in our government.
We believe, in a true democracy, all voters should be represented and should be allowed to participate in the policies of the Country. 85% of OECD countries use proportional representation where votes count and Parties get seats that reflect actual votes. It's about democracy.
We Need a Robust Campaign Budget to Change The System
Can you help us build the most important electoral reform campaign in Canada’s history?
- If we can raise $10,000, we
can create 3 motion graphics videos that
will highlight different examples of proportional representation.
- If we raise $15,000, we can
create three videos plus add an interactive cross-country map on our website that
will give voters crucial riding information going into the 2015 election.
- If we collect $60,000+, we
can create the videos, the map and
organize ads in community newspapers.
Canadians, like us, know we need a better system – one that represents everyone so we can work on the most important issues of our time.
There are a lot of things wrong with our democracy. Getting rid of our winner-take-all first-past-the-post system and replacing it with a system that makes all our votes count is crucial – and we need the resources to get it done.
It's about Democracy! We’ve compiled the research. Proportional electoral systems strongly correlate with higher voter turnout, more satisfied voters, lower income inequality, better environmental outcomes, political stability and even higher economic growth. When votes count, people have more power, and policies reflect what they want.
It's not going to be easyWe need politicians to change the system and we know that even politicians who prefer proportional representation often change their tune when they get in positions of power. Heck, even Stephen Harper applauded Proportional Representation in his paper called "Our benign dictatorship" but you won't see him implementing it any time soon.
In order to change the system, we will need to grow a critical mass of Canadians calling for change. We can do it but we need your help!
