My name is Magnus Manson, I am 15 years old and live on the Sunshine Coast. The total cost of my 2014 season is $9,670. This cost is a combination of travel and race expenses. Travel money is huge when racing in British Columbia, most races are a least 300km from Vancouver. If I do not reach the goal amount, I will rebuild my season based on the amount I have. Indiegogo charges 7% of your goal amount, this is where the additional costs comes from.
I was born in Vancouver, BC. At the age of 6, my family and I decide to move to the Sunshine Coast. One summer my friend invited me up to Whistler for Crankworx, (honestly I had no idea about Crankworx before then) but the day after I got home from Crankworx, I wanted a downhill bike and I wanted to race DH. I don’t know what actually got me hooked on the idea of racing, could have been because my parents were both racing for the national track team back in the day, but slowly my life was all about getting ready and practicing for the coming race season, even though I had no idea of what to expect.
As we neared Kamloops for Race the Ranch two years ago, I wasn’t so worried, I just wanted to do the best that I could do. I had no results from racing, nor real training. My first race run was something of a blur, I just remember getting to the bottom and feeling like I had swallowed a pane of glass. The big moment of joy when I saw that I had come first was indescribable: what a rush! As the season went on I managed to surprise myself and my parents every weekend. That season, I went on to win provincials and the BC overall title, I couldn’t have been happier.
Last year was my first year as U17 and I felt that challenging myself by racing in the expert class was the right thing to do. At National Championships in Panorama, BC, I was feeling good and had all of my lines perfect, I had been practicing at Whistler for the week coming into the race, my dad was also there to help me with my bike. As I remember my race run, it was pretty scary. I remember riding faster than I had in practice. This led to me getting off of my line more than a couple times in my race run. Once I crossed the finish line it had all paid off. That was my goal from the beginning of the season, to win Nationals: I killed it by more than 10 seconds!
This off-season has been very physical. Weightlifting, motocross, and lots of riding have taken up a huge portion of my life. This coming season I had planned to race in the Junior Expert Category, but I am only permitted to race Junior Expert in the BC Cup Circuit, not including Provincials. I will race in the Junior category in Washington if the same rules apply as last year. This jump up will push me to ride up to that next level. One day I want to be up at the top of World Cup game with everyone else.
This year I hope to race 13 races total, 3 in Washington, 2 in California and 8 in BC. I am working as many hours as I can in my minimum wage, part time job. But as the season approaches I am working less and less. I won’t be able to earn enough to cover my expenses for the season ($9,670 total) even when my parents will cover as many of my expenses as they can, there is simply no way we can do what I need to do without help from you! My goal in 2014 is to race as much as I can, perform to my highest capability, and grow stronger and faster for the following seasons to come. Having the support now will help my racing career in the future, having a strong season before I am able to race on the international stage is super important.
