1. Why are you developing this product?
Every year we buy Billions of Electronic devices; so many that we now have more devices in use than people. The more we buy, the more we throw away! By the billions, with devastating impact to the environment... In 2010, US disposed some 2.5 million tons of electronic devices, and only 649 thousand tons were recycled.
A Cisco survey predicts 50 billion Devices in use by 2020 that is almost 7 devices/person; leading to a prediction of more than 10 million Tons of electronic waste to be generated in US alone.
Why Do we throw away so much so quickly:
First, there is no Convergence: We have too many devices per person with overlapping or duplicated features– differentiated by form factors and software,– idle or underutilized Most of the time
Second, devices break by design, and nearly impossible to repair or upgrade; simply opening a device can cause damage and void warranty!
Third, devices run out of needed capacity or require new step of hardware, go out of fashion or style
And lastly as with PCs, our devices cannot support new or popular features, like touch input, and fall behind and must be updated with new innovative designs
New products must be more modular and designed to last longer as Dave Hakkens envisions with “Phonebloks”.
In his Ubuntu Edge campaign video Mark Shuttleworth stated that “Convergence is the future of computing”
Modular and flexible design and convergence must happen to reduce waste created by duplication and incompatibility of hardware and software, and short life span of products.
2. Why should I care?
Everyone that owns or plans to own electronic devices should care about their personal impact to the environment, as well as frequency of electronic device purchases due to design. “You Are” who the products are designed for and how you respond guides the industry!
3. When will LUCAN™Companion PC be available?
We are planning to ship no later than September 2014, however can significantly pull that date in depending on the amount of funds raised. The more orders we have, the bigger message we send to the industry and able to negotiate better terms with manufacturing partners
4. What OS will the device support?
All of our products will be designed and tested to be open platform. We will test Android, Ubuntu for Android and Windows 8. These products will have Android and Ubuntu as default. We are setting up a couple of stretch goals. If we hit the stretch goals, the products will be ready for Windows 8 before shipping.
5. Will it have a battery?
Although we are planning for these products to be stationary, in front of a computer or monitor, we are planning to include optional batteries. Exact specs TBD.
6. I like to type on keyboard and do not like the feel of typing on glass, what options do I have?
Our goal is to develop a product that lasts a long time, reduces e-waste and duplication. Keyboards have been around for a very long time and are among the top e-waste producers. We are looking at a couple of tactile feedback options:
- A new and unique technology similar to what Tactus technology is offering (http://www.tactustechnology.com/technology.html) buttons appear and disappear as magic on touch screen.
- Overlays similar to what touchfire offers (http://www.touchfire.com/)
Both of these require for us to hit our stretch goal!
7. How is LUCAN™Companion PC different than other tablets in the market?
Lucan Companion PC is a unique product and it is designed to slow down the premature dumping of PCs that lack touch capabilities. However, we did not want to just develop a simple Keyboard or input device. The product must last for a long time and eliminate duplication.
We are both environment and consumer focused. The products we develop have to eliminate duplication, drive evolution and convergence. We are also very serious about open platforms to assure your investment in mobile devices and PC based devices can be used seamlessly. Our long term goal is to develop our modular architecture (see www.thenewpc.net)
