Long Island Genealogy (http://longislandgenealogy.com & http://longislandsurnames.com) was envisioned nearly 20 years ago as a platform to facilitate the sharing of Long Island family history research; a central location where information could be provided, shared and evaluated without cost.
Since it's inception LIG has grown quickly serving over 10,000 people daily for the past 5 years. It is driven by a desire to help others connect with their Long Island family roots, traditions and heritage. In a time where family units are spread across the globe there is an exploding need to feel connected.
Since it first went online LIG has always been an individually supported site paid 100% by it's owner and only moderator, Mac Titmus. Over the years relationships have grown with numerous reliable and through Long Island researchers. With their help he is able to verify and document material as it is provided and if it is wrong point out where correct information might be located. It has always been essential to weed out bogus information. The power of the web is massive and bad information can be spread like a virus. LIG is not only the largest regional family history site on the web but one of the few that can boast a response record of nearly 100% and a response time of less then 24hrs.
Every day I have the pleasure to "speak" with people from all areas of the world all seeking the same thing, a feeling of belonging, a sense of security. By finding your roots you find your place in history but it is becoming clear that you may also be helping to assure the health of future generations. As medical gene research grows our knowledge of our ancestral history becomes more important. By studying the medical records and deaths of those in a family – a picture emerges of what a person may be at medical risk for. Cancer, strokes, heart disease, depression and dementia all rank high among the list of things that risk the lives of family. Having accurate medical history is becoming essential in providing a healthy and secure future for our children and theirs.
Unfortunately I am only getting older. The time has come to begin the effort to make this resource permanent. In order to guarantee it's existence long term contracts need to be finalized with providers, non-profit status needs to be acquired and basic equipment needs to be upgraded. All this requires money and unfortunately my retirement check cannot do it alone. I have no problem giving my time. I just can't continue to carry the monthly maintenance or provide the lump sums required to cement it's future. Your contribution can make a difference to thousands of people across the globe. LIG has never been about big companies. It has always been about individuals and their families. It only seems appropriate that it's future be secured by the same.
Times are difficult and I understand everyone can't contribute, but that doesn't mean you can't help. If you feel your family history is important help spread the word about this campaign. Use the Indiegogo share tools to tell others about this effort on FaceBook, twitter or google.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and I hope you will consider being a part of our effort
